Do I have a lakeland terrier?!

Hello! First off, my names Claire and Im owned by my terrier Buster

About 5 or 6 yrs ago I "acquired" a puppy, The Farm he was bred from basically didnt want him and he had bounced between 3 or 4 people before I ended up with him - I think he was too "busy" for them, they wanted a nice little lapdog!!

I was told he was a lakeland, but as I never saw the parents, and have no experiance of the breed - I really have no idea! All I can find in comparison is show breeds which are a world away ;)

So i thought Id ask the experts in working mutts! :D Is he a working lakeland? Or does he have a cross look about him! I keep him trimmed, due to the tendency he has to roll in things, but iv included a picture of his natural coat so you can see :)

The only terriers I have real experience of are from rescue centres and have been picked up from the pound or travellers sites, so their breeding is anybody's guess, BUT your dog does look very like one I fostered for a while that was reckoned to be a Lakey, although the head is somewhat similar to a Patterdale. A cross perhaps.

I am sure there are people on here who are knowledgeable about this, but there is a rescue called Rescue Remedies, they specialise in Patties, Lakies and Fells and I am sure if you sent them some pics they would be able to tell you.

There may be something else in there as they are usually quite stocky with a reasonable length of leg but not too leggy so he may not be a true 100% bred working lakey but not too far from it.

The main reason I think he may be crossed with something (possibly something short haired/smooth coated) is he doesnt have the fluff and curls one would expect, like in the photo you posted :) Around his face and ears, and along his back/tail the fur is very long and wirey, but not double coated. And his legs (except the back section of leg) and sides are very short, then totally bald belly!

Im not really fussed what he is to be honest... its just nice to know :)
 
What a super little dog! Reminds me very much of our little boy we lost; yours could be the brother to him they're so alike - he was such a lovely character and wasn't snappy like some terriers can be, was a perfect gentleman. Always very fastidious and would never eat anything dirty.

But he had the sass to do the job coz one day the fox came along and thought he was gonna have a chicken and Little Man saw him off in good style.

IMO you can't do better than a Lakeland; the one we've got now is a Lakeland X. Sorry don't know whether yours is purebred or not: but whatever, you've got a lovely little dog there who'll give you years of companionship and pleasure.
 
I don't think so to be honest -more Border cross in my opinion. I have a pure Lakeland....I'll try to add a pic:

I am no terrier expert and they baffle me the most on (whats in them) when they come into rescue, we have this little bitch in that was handed as a lakeland with paperwork.

Except the bit about eating nasty things; sounds just like my boy :) He isnt yappy at all, vocal but not yappy; he just makes a lot of grumbly noises as if he is talking to you. He is a loyal little man, who has seen me through some rough time! He is certainly not what most people expect from a small dog!
 
Gorgeous! He looks very much like many of the lakie x border terriers that I groom. That's my favorite of any cross combinations! :)
 
I have a Lakeland cross patterdale and he looks like yours a bit heavier maybe and hes black and white more white than black he's a smashing little dog now 12 years .

I have always kind of assumed he was lakey/border to be honest! He is alot bigger than any border terrier I have encountered at about 17" to the shoulder - and the lakeland bit is only cos i was told he was by his past owner, I have never met one myself!

I have gone without knowing for the last 5 or 6 yrs so not knowing doesnt really bother me, I just seem to be getting alot of people ask recently!
 
In part maybe, but looks like he has border in there too.

We had 2 fabulous working Lakeland bitches years ago. Much smaller in height and span than the dogs pictured on the thread, wire coated with black backs and deep tan underbelly/head/legs.

Lived to work, both very hard with a habit of staying put, so great care had to be taken on where they were worked.

As you say there is a big difference between working and non working Lakelands. Ours certainly wouldn't have made pets, they were totally bonkers and would hunt and catch anything that moved.

They are long gone, just as well really, they would never have adhered to the hunting ban.

I like Borders, intelligent little dogs, little or no shedding, good doers and the most easily trained of the terrier world. Lovely for a pet.
