Can anyone give me some advice pleaseeeee? :o

My mare (9yr old maiden mare) is up at stud and being AI'd. Shes had 2 gos no pregnancy. Theyre scanning to check when shes ready and after shes been AI'd to check everything has done what its supposed to.

We're going for 3rd time but is it just bad luck she hasnt taken so far?
This time the stud suggested we try a different stallion, could that actually help?

(Shes being AI'd because she is VERY aggressive to the stallion apparently. Shows her season fine to the mares in the field but wants nothing to do with the boys??)
Anyone got any thoughts?????

Hi - sorry I can't offer any advise but just wanted to say that I went down the AI route a few years ago with a friends broodmare and had 2 failed attempts with a particular stallion. As luck would have it he was unavailable for the 3rd attempt so went with a different stallion and she took that time.

Can't see the pic of your mare as Facebook is restricted? As it happens the mare I put in foal via ai ended up at langeller stud the following year as the foal sadly didn't make it so took mare to the stud as a foster mother. While she was there I put her back in foal and this time went eu natural to catherston dazzler and now have a lovely 2yr old to show for it. (just posted pics of her in pg 2yr old thread). My friend has a cracking foal by the lovely sea heir, who is rather nice but I do like No submission too :-) spoilt for choice. Have nothing negative to say about the stud. Good luck.x

Just a thought, Mayangold, both those stallions are 26 years old according to the links you've posted. No spring chickens and I understand that the quality and motility of sperm tends to decline with age.

Your mare is a maiden and an unknown quantity in terms of fertility. If I were in your position, I would make sure I used a stallion with top quality semen (and that might mean one in his "prime" 6-12 years old), in case the mare isn't super-fertile herself, especially with AI, just to put the odds on my side.

I am not in any way suggesting either of those stallions are sub-fertile, just that the combination of an older stallion, AI & an untested mare might be reducing the odds of conceiving easily.

That being said, I have known of mares who didn't take to one particular stallion (as if incompatible) but had no trouble conceiving with others...

Good luck x

Just to let you know when I brought my mare I sent her straight to stud. I think it took three months for her to take.
She had been used previously as a broodmare, so I knew she was fertile, but personally as she can be quite hormonal, I believe that for her its with all the changes she stressed herself out of taking. Is that possible with your girl?

elijahsgal- its possible she's stressed herself out but I cant say she's prone to stress. She unloaded at the stud, strode into her box, pulled a face at the mare next door to indicate she's in charge and stood there looking like the lady of the manor. Although she definitely doesn't like the boys.

Ditto this ^^^^

Have they washed her out at all. A friend of mine was having terrible problems getting her mare in foal via AI, she had paid for a AI package with her vet but was shocked at how little work they did. Once she went to another vet, was washed out, found to be dirty too, treated and re AIed she took straightaway.

Sent my mare to be AI'd as a maiden of 12 years. Started at the end of March. After 2 failed attempts and much travelling backwards and forwards eventually asked the Stallion station (not technically a stud) to turn her out in the field with the rest of the mares and not to send her back till she was pregnant. Low and behold, she took on the next attempt and we are the proud owners of a stunning now 2 year old colt. Seems that running with a bunch of hormonal mares did the trick with her. Could also have been the stress of travelling. Next time we'll have her AI'd at home by the vet.

My mare had two failed coverings but took on the third, it gets so stressful, stick with it and good luck.

Yep Im told she has been checked for fluid, I've no idea about 'being washed out' tho. Is that a normal thing to do?

Im hoping third time lucky!!!

Mine took three goes to take too. Well, that's not strictly true, she didn't take first time, then took twins, so one was pinched, then the remaining one didn't develop properly, so she was washed out, and then she took with a single on the third go.

I'm sure she didn't take the first time because she'd only just gone to the stud a week before. She is used to travelling all over the world, and only went 20 mins up the road to stud, but I still think this is why she didn't take the first time.

She was a 17 year old maiden too, and she wasn't interested in the boys either so we went AI.

Hope this gives you some hope.

thanks everyone- this has given me a bit more hope. The farrier thinks its to do with the weather- apparently it messes with their seasons. Is that true?

Yes, it's a very normal thing to do - my vet does it now even if there is no visible fluid on the scan. Seems to work, so worth a try?

Good luck.
