Right - i am just thinking - so no one hang me please:-

Brought my little chap so i could jump and do cross country and go to loads of fun rides over the summer - reason i had a horse box...... little chap is now lame, and tbh i have written off this year with him - he has got at least 6 to 8 weeks box rest and if he is sound then it will be move to paddock then start to get him fit, if not decisons will have to be made, but i honestly dont think i could have him pts even if he is going to be a lawnmower for the next 20 years - you do have responsibilites when you buy them in my opinion.

Now my big lad - whom i do still get a little nervous on and have so far not got the balls to jump him - do i push myself with him and risk loosing my confidence all together with him? but plough on with my summer aims and ambitions - it may be the making of us - it may be the breaking of us - but he is 20 this year and if i could only get confident on him he really would be my horse of a lifetime!

(Please remember i have my old girl whom is enjoying her very happy (and long...)
retirement - she is 26 now)

Shall i start my riding lessons again - where i specifically used to jump Or do i loan a horse for the summer - I would be very very honest in advertising for a loan pony or shall i just go and buy a 4th - (the amount i spend on my hobby one more wont be noticed by the OH- i hope).... ?

Sorry - i am not as uncaring a person as this post may make me seam - i just spend a fortune on my hobby and would at least like to get a good summers worth out of it !

How long have you had your big chap?

2 years - but i spent most of the first year working away.... he is an ex intermediate eventer and a little bit quirky to say the least..... he tells you off big style if you get it wrong! I am searching for some instructors to help my with my confidence and am off to see Denise o Reilly in a week - so hoping she can help me.

I would go for some lessons first off with your chap and see how you get on. If you crack on now and it does not go well there is still plenty of the summer left to loan him out

I would have lots of lessons and also look into sharing/riding someones horse to get confidence and build experience (and have fun!). You will be lucky to get a short term loan and also by the time you are getting used to the horse and building a relationship the summer will be over.

I think the way forward would be to get some lessons on your big chap. Hopefully you will gain your confidence on him with time and get to go out and do all those things with him in the future!!

I am a student and I regularly find loan horses for short term summer loan...believe me...it's very hard and not worth the heart ache!!!!!!

Learn to ride your chap! You are not a professional after all so time is not of the essence. The reason I asked about the time is if you had had him 5 years and still not gained confidence then it aint going to happen.

Get some lessons and dont feel pressured into things you feel you should be doing but dont want to do. At 20 yrs old you can take the pressure off.

Definatlty go for the lessons on your big boy even at 20 he's still got a lot of go and you will learn more from him than a loan horse and to be honest most people are looking for long term loans. So bite the bullet and have lessons with a pro.:D:D:D

ooh denise will help you, she is lovely - has done wonders for me.
have some lessons and see how you go - if not i am sure you will will find something just for summer.
