My mums partner took a few pics of me on the ponio yesterday and I was horrified at how big I look! Do you think I'm wayyy too big for her? I know she can carry my weight, I'm about 10 and a half stone and she's 14.1hh and normal/slightly stocky build. She's rising 4 so should hopefully make 14.2hh ish!
She's my 'forever horse' so I'm not going to put her straight up for sale if you say 'Yes, You're huge!' lol.
Excuse the gammy hand on the first pic, I have no idea what I was doing.
Forgot to say that I'm 5'9!

Yes I do think you look big ( tall not fat ) on her but at the end of the day if she is happy carrying your weight and neither of you are hindered by this then so what.

You have a tall body, which makes you look biggish on her, but I think you look fine

She's gorgeous

You look long in the body but if she is comfortable carrying your weight then i wouldnt worry. Im 5ft 10 & 10 1/2st and ride a 13.3hh gypsy cob now I look big! but then like you his my dream partner, and his rising 4 and hopefully will grow some more over the next couple of years **fingers crossed**
She is lovely btw!

Pony squisher springs to mind!! Erm yes you do look big on her to be honest and she won't grow that much more. A couple of skateboards might help take the weight off her back lol

I think far too many people insist on riding very large horses that they then have difficulty managing. Don't worry about it, you're nice and slim and she'll have no trouble carrying you.
Also, she may well have a higher head carriage as she grows up and becomes more balanced and "on the bit", and then your height will matter much less. She'll also fill out and muscle up and she may even make 14.3hh if she is a slow developer.

are you being serious?

poppymoo, yes she calmed down a lot so I went for a hanging cheek with french link. I never intended for her to be in the gag long term it was just a stop gap while she was going through a phase but she's going really nicely in this one.

I think you look fine, I'm 5'9" and used to have a 14.1 Arab on loan.
You look to be a bit longer in the body than I am (most of my height is in my lower legs- makes for finding long boots that are long enough impossible!) but your legs don't hang below your horse's belly when it looks like you are riding at a normal length stirrup.

LOL, that'll be me then

5ft4 (and small with it), riding a 17hh (and a bit!!) IDx... every day I wish I was a couple of inches taller!!

To the OP, I don't think you are too big. You are tall on her but you're not heavy. My 14.2hh Welshy is out on loan to a girl who is 5ft9 (and a fair bit heavier than you), he is fine with it and they don't look out of place.

As others have said, you do look long in the body but not too heavy. I am exactly the same, although I am only 5'3" I dont feel comfortable on anything smaller than 14.2hh as I feel like my body is that of a 5'8" person.

I think as long as you are a balanced rider then you are ok - otherwise it is too easy to unbalance the horse with your body.

Well, when we bought her, we hoped to do a few local unaff SJ comps. But, she doesn't seem to be a big jumper. She prefers a plod down the road plus she's scared of trailers. So we would have to conquer the trailer fear even if we only wanted to do a bit of showing or something. But it's early days so you never know!

Well as you don't want to jump (big) then all should be splendid

You do look too tall on her, but obviously you are slim enough not to put a strain on her.

I think far too many people go for how it looks rather than what it can carry.

I have a 16.3 , a 16hh and a 14hh and to be honest i love riding the little one the most!
I'm 5'8 and don't care as long as the pony can carry me.

You look fine!!

If she's still only 3 (rising 4) and she's carrying your weight okay then she'll only get stronger as she matures and becomes more fit as well. You do look a little under horsed, but if you and she are both happy who cares?

Depends what is more important to you, the way you look as well as the important things or just simply the important things...enjoying riding her and also being able to do what you want to do with her in the future?

If she is only 4 believe you me, she will look a different kettle of fish by the time she's 7 going on 8, she will grow a tad more and she will broaden and muscle up and eventually ride bigger.

Your a lovely slim and tall young lady so weight wise your fine and people would die for those legs lol but I do think personally your a bit on the big side just because your tall that's all, but you don't look silly and she'll fill out.

I'm 5'6 and I'm not as slim as you and one of my others was only a 14.1 but he was cobby (not really heavy though) and had a deap girth, short coupled etc but I looked better on him than I did my 16.2 TB! which is my point, if you tall and long bodied at 5'9' your gona look pretty dam tall on anything lol (i mean that in a nice way by the way).

If your happy then that is all that counts looks wise, just because we grow into adults doesn't mean we have to grow out of our ponies!, anything a horse can do....remember a pony can do it better!

I don't think you are too big for her, but something looks a bit odd in the photos. It looks as if you are sitting right on the pommel of the saddle, you look rather far forward as if maybe the saddle is right up on her shoulder. If you look a bit too tall it's just cosmetic in my opinion, weightwise there's nothing of you, so I can't see a problem. Wouldn't do too much jumping for a while yet though, as she's only rising 4.

Ok - as a fellow 'pony squasher' (mine is also mine for life and aint going know where so if i have to become anorexic and chop my legs off at the knee so be it!)
someone pointed out to me this the other day, ....

Proportionally I am no different to a tall person riding a horse, the only reason people notice i am slightly tall for my steed is because the steed in question is a pony. If i was 6ft whatever, stick thin on a 16h TB and looking a bit long for it - no one would bat an eye lid or say otherwise.

What it boils down to is;
are you too heavy
are you too tall to ride in a balanced manner or to affect the balance of the horse

dont worry about what others think, make sure you and the horse are happy and comfortable. I've had my 13.1 for 3 years now and we have a right laugh - yes we get quite a fair bit of stick mostly in jest, but we also regularly prove ourselves too. I'd look a right whazzock on some flipping great 16hand thing, wouldnt be able to get on from the ground with my dodgy knees either! I do feel underhorsed sometimes but not too often.
Unless you feel there is a problem or feel under horsed then i wouldnt worry about it!

I think you look fine. I posted some photos of me jumping at RAF Halton yesterday and I am the biggest pony-squisher of the lot. I am 5'11 1/2 and my girl is a 14.3 argy tb. I think that, as long as the horse can carry you happily for the activity you are choosing to do and that you are comfortable riding her........bollocks to what anyone else thinks.

Oooh, that turned into a bit of a rant. I guess I get pee'ed of with people making comments about how lanky I am on my pony........
