do i need a neck cover?

Daisy will be having an Irish blanket clip tomorrow, does she need a neck cover?

she is a woolly native so YO thinks she needs the whole neck off but i don't have a neck cover, just a hw turnout

She is out 8am - 4pm in a field with good shelter from hedges.

Her rug is a danish make called montag, I've only just bought it so don't want to get another one but wondered if i could fit a cover from a different rug.

She has a long thick mane which falls on both sides of her neck. I didn't get her a neck cover originally because I'd heard that they can rub the mane and if possible I'd like it to stay long for showing next year.

My lad is fully clipped and only wears neck cover if frrezing with driving rain/sleet/snow - ie Jan/Feb time

At the moment he is in a MW as it is colder these past couple of days but prior to that was in a LW.

What's an Irish Blanket? Never hear of that one!

My boy is being fully clipped today and will wear a neck cover only to be turned out in ! I dont think it is that essential to have a neck cover unless it s freezing but i am sure you an get other brands onto your present rug just make sue you have placed on your rug to clip the neck rug onto!

It takes off all the neck to the shoulder and then goes down at an angle to the belly rather than the traditional right angle line going along the belly all the way. She said that there isn't any point taking the line all the way long if she gets really sweaty on her neck but not elsewhere.

You know neckcovers have only been around for the last, at most, 10 years - and horses coped perfectly well before they were invented

Personally for your horse, no, its not necessary

Cairo has exactly the same clip, neck off then from the shoulder straight back to the belly, leaving all the back and hind quarters on. I think it is great for older horses and have done it for years.

Digressing, I didn't use a neck cover last year - and have only used it occasionally when it has been really wet and icy and only as our field has little shelter from the elements.

Personally if you have a native type, which are thick skinned then I would not bother. As yours is only out by day, then certainly don't worry.

He'll be fine. Mine's having a hunter clip and doesn't have a neck cover, going to get a snuggley hood but just for stable use when very cold and for keeping plaits in when going hunting.

i have a welsh sec D who has a combined hunter/full clip (legs/saddle patch on, head off) & as soon as he's clipped he wears a neck cover as he feels the cold quite alot, horses lose a lot of their body heat form the neck
