Hm.

Given my inelegant dismount last week, which led to landing on my back (breaking L2 - a compression fracture - somewhere along the way), I am wondering if a new BP will be in order before I get back on

Okay, so I won't be going anywhere near a horse's back for three months or so, but as I will aslo need to get a new hat, I'd like time to prepare D (he knows about the hat lol) :D

I have a Rodney Powell, but I've never really liked it, and the shoulder pad things are too big anyway.

Heard good things about the Kan Teq.

*I have the feeling that I may have already posted about this, but if I have, I blame the drugs :D :D*

Ahh, dear dear drugs  No. Not those drugs! :p I mean painkillers, work wonders :D

Have also heard good things about Kan Teq though they are a tad pricey, course it depends on your budget and commitment to the body protecter, I get bored of them! Have also heard great things about Airowear (sp?!) And totally agree about the Rodney Powell ones - feel like I'm zipping up a corset, regardless if it's a little loose, just feels so restricting.. shame it does't have the look-wise benefits of a corset  :p

I have one of the Champion Flexairs. Really nice and lightweight, though you still feel you have something there, so feel secure. It's ventilated somehow..?! I swear, I never get too hot in it :p Also have a Racesafe as a spare. Very flexible, though does feel kind of strange at first.. Could just be me though :p Love this one as well, very lightweight also, though not as 'cool' as my Champion, which doesn't seem to give any added heat at all! Anyway, that's my experience anyway! xx

I love my racesafe! :D

I don't think i have ever heard anyone say a bad word about them. I just wanted something that didn't make me feel like i was riding in a cardboard box :p They are super comfy and felixble so i always wear it.

Hope you feel better soon! xx

You do definitely need a new protector I'm afraid. The foam is filled with small bubble which break to cushion your fall. They don't re-inflate! I broke L2 and L3 in a fall a few years ago (I wasn't wearing a BP - we were schooling!) so I know what you are going through. Took me a lot longer than 3 months to get back though!

Expensive though they are I do really like the point 2's. (I wear a Champion underneath.) I love the Kan Teq but they only fit small breast sizes and at a FF I can't squeeze in!

Having already broken my back once I do feel way more secure knowing that my spine will be better protected if I ever did come off again. I already have to ride in a brace. If I fell hard again the chances of my doing permenant nerve damage at the weakened point is too serious not to have the best possible protection.

Agree. New back protector needed. I'm also a racesafe fan

Good excuse to go to Burghley and get one fitted by the makers. Had mine fitted at a show and hadn't previously realised how snug they are supposed to fit.

Sorry if I'm being dim with this question Mrs M, but I assume from your question that you had your body protector on when you fell.

And if so, how come you still broke your back?

I know these things aren't by any means 100%, but I'd have hoped you'd get away with bad bruising or something, with that much armour on. You must have landed really hard. I suppose without it, it could have been much worse.

Are you still in hospital? Hope you are doing ok.

:)

Took this from the airoware website

What will my body protector protect?

Body protectors offer some protection from impacts suffered as a consequence of falling from horses. Impacts may be against soft or hard ground, or objects such as trees, vehicles, posts and rails. However serious the accident, the body protector is designed to reduce the severity of injury but cannot claim to be entirely preventative. Body protectors do not offer spinal protection or prevent injuries involving severe torsion, flexion, extension or crushing of the body.

this is what the website says about replacing

Inspection: We recommend that you check your body protector regularly for wear and tear. Damage to the impact absorbing materials may be apparent by reduced thickness or a change in feel. If in doubt, replace your garment. In the event of a fall, where the garment has had a serious impact, it should be replaced.

Oh poo. Guess you're right :( :eek::rolleyes::p:cool:

I think the break (it's a compression fracture of the vertebra) was the result of me landing on my feet, or due to the force of the forward motion whilst actually hitting the ground. My lower back hit first, then middle back and arms just above elbows, then neck/head/upper shoulders.

I'm out of hospital now thanks :D. Back for a check up and x-ray next week, hence taking everything I can to help the bone heal itself. If it doesn't behave, I'll have to have an operation or risk it collapsing, which would not be nice :(:o

I do have small boobs, so the Kan Teq with a Point Two over the top may well be the way to go! I know they cost a lot, but my company currently depends on me, so it's a comparatively small price to pay :)

Hats - I'm a Charles Owen shaped head , but am interested in the Protector that Weezy has. Just need to get act together as head needs measuring and fitting, etc., and most importantly, colours need choosing :D
