Vet cam out last thursday to horse with mystery swollen leg after he cam back out on loan, and put him on antibiotics and said he wanted us to ring him on the tuesday and tell him how it is so i did no different still heat and swelling is the same and he said i will put him on another week of antibiotics and then if no better might come out and do x-rays went back down a couple of hours ago and the heat is spreading down his leg as if the swelling is going to go back up, it may be nothing to worry about but it gets a bit annoying when it is me thats having to ask if when to introduce ridden work. His leg has been like this for 2 weeks now and shows no sign of improvement and seems to be getting worse. Should i get a second opinion?
Gettind real annoyed lol

it'd wouldnt do any harm to get a second opinion on it.

you never know your vet might have missed something that another one will pick up and if its not got any better over the two weeks i'd be wondering what the matter was.

id also want some direction from the vet in way of exercise/turnout etc and wouldnt expect to have to ask/press about it

Have you actually told your vet that the heat is now speading down the leg? Or did you just say that there was no significant improvement?

i would get a second opinion. OR ask for further investigation.

your post spounds simular to what happened to me with my mare, she came back off loan suddenly.. swollen leg and lame.. turned out she had a tendon injury. BUT because of a loan agreement, and me not trusting people it was only 3 days before i asked for x rays/ultrasound. i guess the point im making is if your neddie is also lame and its getting worse then dont hesitate.

Before you go to the expense and trouble of getting another vet out, you really should speak to your vet and tell him that you aren't happy. The "new" vet will have ethical reasons for wanting to know why you are not happy with vet #1.

Also if you don't have confidence/are not happy with vet #1, maybe its time you took your business to a new practise anyway ?

didn't tell vet that as have only just discovered it rang another vet and they said to tell them to come out tomorrow and take x-rays so thats what i will do and it will be my usual vet aswll

Well, to be fair to your vets they can only go on the information you provide....... And that is not reason to seek a second opinion.

But if your not happy, sack them and engage another practice.
