All being well I plan to wean my filly on Sunday. She is going to stay at home with uncle Ivan (my 25 year old tb) and mum is going to one of our summer fields about 1 mile away. At the moment she is being fed a stud balancer in token amounts just to get her used to hard feed. Do I need to put her onto something else or is the stud balancer enough. We have very good quality haylage but poor grazing.

I would definately speak to a specialist as with foals it is so important that their growth is steady. I definately would keep her on the same feed during the weaning process purely because this is a stressful time and you dont want to introduce unnecessary change. Good Luck hope all goes well.

Agree don't change anything now, keep with the stud balancer but I'd increase the amounts slowly as without the milk her belly will be emptier and therefore she'll be more willing to eat more, my colt only casually ate the food until a couple of days after weaning now he eats up nicely! I added beet and a bit of chaff to encourage chewing about a week before, I found my boy eats it better wet than dry pellets. Good luck with it all.....

And thanks tikino for your compliment, your not so little one is looking pretty good too. I think we can both safely give ourselves a pat on the back xx

I fed stud mix to mine for her first 2-3years because of the extra protein in it for growth and repair along with alfa a to stop her rushing it as well as the nutritional value extra fibre and calcium etc, your foal looks great on what you're feeding her! x
