Ok following on from flintus post I have a GPA hat bought about 4 years ago. Is it safe to do small XC jumps (2'-3') wearing it?
 
Providing your hat hasn't been dropped or knocked heavily it's integrity should not be compromised & it would be ok to use. If you've come off & had a heavy head knock I'd certainly change it. In the whole scheme of things hats are replacable, heads aren't.

no been pretty lucky in that respect "runs off desperately to touch wood" I was just wandering safety wise as I'm sure someone said the GPA weren't allowed by some organisations?
 
I SJ in my GPA but I absolutely NEVER hack or hunt in it, I have a Charles Owen J3 for that - in fact my GPA only ever comes out in the summer for schooling and for competitions.

easy is the peak attached to the body of the hat and if you press the front of it hard will it crumple or not move. It attached and solid then fixed.

The peaks on velvets are firstly obviously not attached but are far more flexible and on impact will crumple

Ahhhh I also have a Just Togs hat that I bought last year to do shows in, blue velvet with beige coloured harness not sure what model though. So if I was to get another hat which one would everyone recommend?
ETS: so my velvet one would be better to use then? Or am I better buying another one anc keeping the velvet one for shows?
 
Really? I competed BE intro and PN in a JTE that I am sure has a fixed peak - I've got it yellow tagged as well!
 
I figure if you are allowed to jump whopping great Badminton trakeners in it, it will be suitable for hacking

As I said, I have a J3, it is super comfy but DOES get a bit warm in the summer hence why if I am having a proper hardwork training sesh I wear my GPA.
 
one that fits your head! i know seems a stupid answer but its amazing the people who don't! Also depends what you want it for. I presume your JT one is fine and so any other would be for xc etc so I would go for a standard skull cap. There is research about which have the best safety ratings but I can't remember where online it is sure someone else can dig out the link though.

You may find your JTE actually has a collaspable peak as I believe some do but not all! Just actually checked on robisons and yes SOME of the JTEs have what is called a 'flexible' peak which means it is not fixed as it will collaspe and crumple on impact hence being BE allowed though personally I would still prefer a skull cap

hmm I do get a sweaty head anyway even with the GPA (sorry that was too much information I know

) and as a result the inside has compacted at the front so is padded a bit so could probably do with another hat anyway. think a mooch on the internet is in order.
 
thanks, I always get my hats fitted properly and can tell myself now if its too tight or loose. will see what I can find out about the best skull caps safety wise.
ETS: Just found this about the GPA's - it says the visoris flexible but I take it not as flexible as it should be then?

Just to throw a spanner in the works - there is a photo in the latest edition of Eventing mag of someone going Xc in a GPA Pikeur

What safety standard(s) are the GPAs?
 
I'm ashamed to say that it had never crossed my mind - never read anything on it until now! Fortunately though I'm not planning on eventing for a while now so it won't really matter!

I find that really interesting.

I have a Troxel Spirit for summer riding (My head never gets hot and sweaty in it) and a Charles Owen Young Riders hat that looks more traditional.

When I had my Troxel I was informed by people on HHO that it was a dangerous hat and most wouldn't entertain wearing one as they're not British Kitemarked. They do meet PAS 015 and something else which I can't recall off hand. However, it has a better Enchap result than my Charles Owen.
 
Interesting results - my skull cap which is now my second hat is right in the middle with 2 dot thingys.

And my new hat which incidently had a peak isn't on there as it's only been on the market a year. It's a Charles Owen so will be interested to see the next set of test results.

I've only ridden in a GPA once and hated it. Really felt like there was nothing protecting my head and that was schooling on a rubber surface, let alone jumping big wooden things

Is it the PC that have said a big fat no to jumping xc in the GPAs?
