Do I really need to jump 1m at home....

BE90 in my opinion is never up to height in the show jumping, but I have seen the odd hefty XC fence (for 90). I dont generally jump much bigger at home than in competitions, in fact I rarely jump at home full stop (only in training and competitions usually as I find it keeps my established horses pretty keen and happy). I used to compete at novice level and was still a woose in XC training - if I had the choice of fences then I'd likely for for the 90 than the novice fence, but put me in a competition environment and I'll jump pretty much anything put in front of me. Adrenalin really helps and makes you ride far more positively than in training so the horse goes better IMO. My current mare has done one BE90 but is still only doing 90cm SJ as I just haven't bothered to step up to 1m yet. I guess its whatever works for you.

I am a bit like michen.
I never really jumped a metre at home but went out and done a season at Novice round some of the biggest courses!!
I am awful at home... i get to fiddly and tense and over concentrate...
I did jump about 1.20m at clinics... sometimes I just need someone shouting at me. Haha.
Also I tend to be alone on the yard, so it's in the back of my mind if anything happens I could lie there for hours before someone knows I'm missing. I am braver when there is someone there, hence why at clinics and events.

You are like me. if i am left to my own devices at home I tend to just ride rubbish in general haha.
I do clinics and I get told to do stuff and I will do it but leave me to jump 1 metre at home and i cant do it. Even a small fence seems daunting.

Get me to a competition and I am quite different. Bizarre as would think would be the other way around.

By at home I mean in lessons or clinics, they may not be technically at home but most people and their horses do need to be pushed a bit before venturing out competing, more experienced riders will know their horses, the limitations and may not need to get their eye in but mine will rarely jump higher in a single round class than they would at home, the odd jump off may be about the same but by then they are usually really up for it.

This was on a BE80 course. It was flipping massive! A good 10cm of brush to make it look 90+. And a ditch in front. I would not want to be seeing that for the first time on a course walk if I had not jumped similar before.

I think the SJ phases are fairly easy tbh compared to pure SJ at the 'same' height. I've popped round BE 80 SJ and it felt small whereas full up 80cm SJ courses still feel pretty intimidating.

But OP, you jumped that metre oxer so you are training higher than you are competing so you'll be fine. I find I am much braver in competition than in training. Once I start I just point and pray and somehow we get round! In training I am far more cautious.

I've showjumped to 1.35 but I'm pretty sure I'd wet myself if I was cantering up to that fence haha!

That fence is in the 80cm in the pic with the chestnut!

I never jump much bigger at home than I do at a competition. Sure you will be fine OP.

ETS just seen they actually said that. But to be fair the fence jumps well.

I'm another one who is a bit of a wuss at home and more 'game' actually at a competition but i realized that it was putting me on the back foot so have made a conscious effort to expand my comfort zone at home and jump more technical/ bigger.

you'll probably find the 90 SJ ok, i'd only jumped 90 UA before eventing and found it much the same, 90 BS though is :O

Its the XC though that i often think 'Ooo glad i jumped bigger at home' as the brush can often add a substantial amount on which can be un nerving. This was Tweseldown 90 last august, i'm 5'6 so as you can see the brush adds a fair bit on especially so as its jumping down hill and on a related line, but it actually rode really well and unfortunately doesn't look nearly as imposing as the pro photos from the day!

I had never jumped a 60cm straight until the day of the yard show i took part in and i was in the last two for the win type thing and i won cause i did 60cm. Pathetic height to anyone other than us total nancies who just about get over a crosspole hahha

If you put one up for me now i could not get oer it, but honestly i didn't even feel the difference at the time.

But its still my proudest moment on my horse
