I have a little 8 year old argie gelding who came out of polo and needs to find a nice quiet hacking home. He is perfect in every way but he windsucks. He rests his chin on other horses and the fence if he can and sucks in air. He only does it occasionally and he is holding good weight, despite being out 24/7 unrugged. I took him in for rehoming as he was due to be shot but I am debating whether or not to rehome him as he is such a lovely chap. I vowed never to take on another windsucker after I had one die on me 2 years ago but this little chap is so nice I am torn ...

I have a cribber so basically the same but with a post.

Slight difference in that she's a homebred mare and always had the slightly stressed gene which I obviously exasperated and she began cribbing one winter. Realised she wasn't happy stabled so now she's out in a small herd 24/7.

The habit annoys me, I must admit. I go through phases with it, from 'do what you want' to 'oh dear she's obviously dying from something'. But I've learnt to manage it - she's out with company with room to roam which limits it. In winter she gets plenty of forage. It's about 5-10mins a day I've learnt, more when she's standing next to a post rather than seeking one out.

I've thought about ulcers but vet said it was unlikely as she maintains weight well, no reluctance to go forwards etc. She's fed on an ulcer friendly diet to help this though.

She's perfect in the way that the 'purpose' I have her for she fulfills perfectly. She is an amazing grassroots pony with a fabulous attitude to work who always makes me smile. For me, the cribbing is a minor flaw. It feels good so she does it occassionally. Would I get another one? I can't honestly answer that. Depends on the frequency, the intensity etc.

I'm a great believer of 'go with your gut.' If you think you can handle it etc then why not? If he's perfect in every other way is it that big of a deal?

I had an ex polo pony who windsucked, he was a one in a million! Absolutely bombproof and the most lovely person so I'm biased :) Cribbing can be managed, I have two windsuckers at the moment because it's a vice I can live with but only you know if it's something you could live with...
