apologies for the essay!
Ok so i bought a new horse (daisy) in february to get my confidence back jumping, new mare is lovely 15.2hh ISH by ricardo Z, rising 9yrs, bright bay very pretty, has bsja'd and won around £200not. will jump anything, very brave, always in the ribbons, very quick against the clock, competed in rc events and been to david broome champs this year, just been xc schooling for the first time the other week...think we will stick to sj as she was very spooky!

dilema is im not sure I need/want her anymore! I have 2 other horses one of which is my 24yr old first pony smudge and her 3yr old son charlie who i bred, Im just starting with charlie and im really enjoying myself! took him to his first sj (60cm) and he came 4th with a double clear, and he went xc schooling (again 60cm) and flew round eveything! we are taking things slow he doesnt get jumped that much.

smudge is my pony of a lifetime who won everything for me and her son is the double of her, even very similar to ride so I think thats why I enjoy riding him :)
So im not really enjoying competing daisy now :( although she is always in the ribbons, should I sell her now, or next year when charlie is older and will be competing more? also can anyone give me a rough idea of a price? I swapped my other horse for her so dont really know how much to ask for her. *wont put a pic on here as im not advertising

I'd be inclined to keep her atm to be able to carry on competing at a higher level and push yourself a bit more....Only for risk of pushing little Charlie to quickly to maybe compensate for not having her workload for you to have fun with anymore.

Also. If he's 3, he shouldn't really be ellidgable for ridden shows...

So yeah...If it was me I'd keep her till next season then live the dream on your young lad :)

If you can afford to keep all 3 then i wouldn't sell Daisy. What happens if Charlie isn't fast enough when he's older or can't jump high enough...get's injured etc you will have a fall back horse.
You have only tried the XC once? if so that might be a bit soon to give up, maybe that's something you can work towards whilst SJ'ing Charlie?
Perhaps you could look for a sharer to keep Daisy ticking over and you find out what Charlie is really like as 3 is very young.
If Daisy is a good jumper then keeping her for another year will only make her 10 which is no age for a horse and it gives you a year to give it some thought?
I've seen people get rid of horses because they think they have moved up a stage and buy something completely unsuitable because they think they are the next World Champion and their next horse scares the living daylights out of them and the wish they had never got rid of their last trusted, dependable show jumper and they can't afford to buy another or can't find another like their last horse?!!?
I don't mean your not good or capable and i know you already have another horse your loving to bits and i hope you go all the way together but it's just something for your to think about.

As for price...My friend is selling her daughters pony because she's now too big for her.
She's a 14.2hh connemara x, JC pony winning £425 not £200 act, 12 years old. Super speedy and jumping 1.10 to 1.15 courses. She's asking £5500 so i don't know if that gives you a guide?...ps this wasn't meant as an advert either!!!

First of all - stop competing Charlie - he is too young to be allowed and it will harm him later on - so if you want a sound horse in the future don't do it. And as a result of that I'd keep Daisy another year or two and not sell her right now.

I'm sorry but I wouldn't be jumping a three year old if I wanted them to still be sound and happy in their teens. I'd say cut back on the work with Charlie and stick with Daisy for the time being if you want to be competing.

thanks for all your replies, think i will keep her for another year. re charlie i can understand some people might think he is doing to much but he has only been jumped once in a competition (very small local show) and will be jumped in a few more this year, he's only been jumped about 4 times at home, he gets 2days off a week and is a very happy baby, he will be kept in work because he likes to be busy and have job to keep his mind occupied, i wont be turning him away because he is very mature for his age, perhaps i need to keep reminding myself of his age just so i dont do too much.

I disagree with the other advice. If you don't particularly enjoy Daisy and she's served her purpose then now is the perfect time to sell; she's under 10 and its at the start of the summer season.

For price, I'm not sure as it depends on how big she jumps and how good she is as an allrounder, or is she purely a showjumper? At a guess I would say perhaps 5k would be a reasonable amount to ask.

QR with regards to Charlie - But it says in all the schedules I see that horse MUST be 4 or over and it is this for a reason. He might seem mentally mature for his age but he won't be skeletally mature yet - too much too soon, even if he does enjoy it, put him away for a year or you won't be enjoying him later on.

Agree with advice about not jumping your 3 year old. Apart from the fact that its against competition rules, you need to have his interests at heart. If his mind is active then do things with him that will help strengthen him, NOT ruin him. HIS welfare is in YOUR hands, please don't be selfish.

I've seen a beautiful and honest young warmblood pushed too hard too early because his owner wanted to compete him. She ended up with a horse that had to be de-nerved and then still attempted to jump him afterwards. His frequent rearing and discomfort now means that he can never be jumped.

I'd go with the others, Charlie is to young to be jumping, just think of the damage to his legs, he still has some growing to do. Don't think of what he can do now but what he could be years ahead.Don't ruin him.
