my horse who has just come into season for the first time since i brought her as just pinned me against the gate this wasnt a prob just grabbed the whip and told her to get of but is it typical for mares to get pushy like this.

They can do! My mare has just finished her season and she is a miserable old cabbage whilst in season!

She TRIES to be bolshy, but I just reinforce the NO when handling her.....and she stands and shivers, even in the heat....when getting ready to ride out, and is quite spooky as well.

Back to her normal self now, I'm happy to report! Someone suggested giving her something, but TBH, if all she does is pull faces, hop about a bit more and pretend to be scared of everything, then I'm happy to get her through it, I've had her 3 years, and it's been the same each summer.....sure, of course she will come in season again as the year wears on, but the worst one is always about now....

she was on regumate but having talked to people who knew her before me i decided like u that its better for her to just work through it. i just wanted to check why she was being pushy. but if its because shes in season ill just deal with it and remain firm. thanks for you thoughts

they can get bolshy definately. my young horse is usually quiet to handle, she had ehr season and literally turned into the devil, reared with me on her and kicked me all in one day ! now she is back to being her sleepy plod self again, and i am going to try out some cheaper alternatives to regumate...already got one on it cant afford 2!!!

Mine tend to just get smushy, but this might be due to the fact we used to have a rig (who funnily enough was on regumate too) and they LOVED flirting with him. Now they do it with my oblivious gelding, who just thinks he's become big boss suddenly :)
My old mare used to get very sensative and uptight about it all though so everyone is different :)

yer thats why i though i might just try and handle her through it as i cant afford 70 a month. its nice to know that shes pushy because shes in season not because she hates me lol

some horses do, depends on their temperament. my horse is terible when shes in season, if she sees any other horse she will just push and drag me around, and if we are riding past horses whilst shes in season she just dances around, shakes her head and whinnies alot.

Mine bit/nipped me 6 times today during groundwork, acted like an ADHD and broke her joinup when a couple of geldings went past the menage - normally (out of season), she is an obedient Angel;)
I've had her ovaries scanned, but she's fine, just pmt, the daft sod:D

My mare is away at a friends on loan, who has just covered her AI from her own stallion. Apparently the AI didn't take........

and though I did warn my friend that fences tend to be a minor challenge for my ASBO mare, she should infact install her in to a Jurassic Park type enclosure.

So, five foot high three rail fence, solid wood and electrified, built by a civil engineer who builds tunnels through mountains of rock....

...and today, she found the mare was peeing on the stallions stable door, having broke thru Jurassic Park enclosure. Poor stally!!!!!
