I'm mainly talking about show jumpers/eventers, does it matter what color and markings horses raw to you? I only ask as I heard someone asking for a bsja showjumoer but only wanted a bay and coudlnt have any white markings. Just wondered if looks mattered to anyone else as they have never concerned unless there medical concerns. :-)

I think for higher level dressage a lot of people look for a horse with either no white markings, or symmetrical ones if they do have them. The thinking is that uneven white socks or an asymmetric blaze can make the movement look uneven or the head look tilted. Of course you can argue that judges at that level should be able to tell..

Personally colour and markings don't really bother me although I do have a soft spot for chestnuts with a lot of white! My horse is a chestnut but just has a little star; to me anyway he is beautiful :) If I were looking for another horse then colour would not be important (though I'll admit I'm not too keen on coloureds or greys but that's just due to the extra grooming and cleaning involved  )

Yes.

For breeding stock because I am only interested in a certain colour or patterning. I won't buy tobianos because I prefer overo patterning.

For a riding horse I don't care what colour a horse is as long as it ticks the boxes, I have three boring bright bay mares and bay really is my least favourite colour of all, but they are good riding horses :)

Yes but I would class a 'good conformation' as looks, which usually entails good movement therefore better performance. As for a pretty or handsome head then I'm not bothered unless it has to be true to type for breeding/showing purposes.

Colour, well I like my greys, steel, dapple, roan, love red chestnuts, not really keen on bays or coloureds but if I like the horse then to hell with the colour.

Love horses with big ears and an interesting head....even if it is ugly lol

Colour itself wouldn't bother me at all but I wouldn't really want an outright ugly horse. BH is about as plain as I'd want to go, and as people constantly tell me, he isn't really ugly, just workmanlike. I like being able to see a pretty face over the door.

I said I didn't want white legs due to the increased risk of mud fever on pink skin, and I ended up with Wolf who has 4 white legs and a big white face (including a pink nose and pink eyebrows). He was accused of looking like a bull calf when he was little but he's grown into his markings now.

Then we said we didn't want another grey (we already had three....) and ended up with another one anyway. He doesn't have pink skin on his legs though, phew....

Looks only matter to me as much as when their might be physical consequences (ie conformational issues).

Yup basically cos I'm shallow but I could never own a horse that wasn't pleasing to my eye.., of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it has not always worked out for me but that's me... Not saying it's right or wrong but when I walk on the yard I like a string of pretty faces!

Well I didn't want to buy our boy cos he has the biggest head ever & a big pink muzzle!!! I thought he was the ugliest thing ever (lemon & white fat cob) but it wasn't going to be me that rides him so the decision was my daughters. She wanted him for SJ & he did the job so we bought him - it seems he's like marmite - people think he's either gorgeous or horrid!! I love him to bits now but both me & the daughter have said we're having a bay next - we've had a dun, palomino & now this coloured & they've all been a sod to keep looking clean :D !!

wel i'm no showjumper or eventer lol but i do have personal preferences:D Not so much colour wise, i don't dislike any colour but i'm not a huge fan of coloureds, mainly because i have a thing about symmetry and coloureds are rarely symmetrical! I would always be wanting to dye bits or bleach them out to make it look 'right' lol!! I don't like white faces too much either, probably for the same reason, can make the face look lopsided to me:o the only physical characteristic i'm not keen on is a very pronounced roman nose:o
