Do 'most' horses hoon about in a new field?

Well, mine does... every time they go into a new field, even if they have been in that field at some point before! Wouldn't be so bad, but with the very wet weather this year most of my fields are and do have boggy patches and I worry about silly mare pulling her shoes off or tweaking something in the boggy bits.

After 10 mins of hooning they settle and normality resumes!!

Their way of showing you how much they love you for their new home, its very entertaining but I agree a bit cringe worthy at times, hopefully the hooning about doesn't last too long before they get their heads down :)

We swop ours into the hayfield once its cut, the field is directly next to theirs. One hoons anyway even after a long day. They usually blast round several times, then mine does a graze while trotting type routine, interspersed with mad broncs, daughters races round getting everyone to join her for a blast until they give in. Usually run to the gate to snort at us & race off again. After about 15mins everything but daughters pony settles. She grazes for a minute, then hoons for a bit for the first hour or so. Luckily she's a tiny dainty thing so doesn't churn it up.

lol yep mine do too, daughters new pony didn't when we first got her but then she's been in the small fatty paddocks until last week. She then got put in the big field with all the others while i sorted some fencing in the winter paddocks, first time all 6 have been in together and all hooned apart from the newforest who belongs to my friend, he looked at them like they were all mad and did a bit of half hearted trotting after them but that was it, i guess having the run of the newforest doesn't really compare to my 4 acre field!
i love watching the 2 welshies doing their flashy footwork, paces to die for if only they would do it under saddle lol:rolleyes: big girl is a small stampede all by herself and with her wonky leg which dishes i can't help but shout 'run forrest run':D

yes.. well actually i only have to bring him in to ride or groom and when i let him out again he hoons about and tries to kick me on his way away... this is even more annoying when its muddy as i always end up plastered :/
