Do People At Your Yard Actually Ride?

yes only me and another girl ride at my yard.
Most of the other horses are old or broken, there is a couple of horses that are rideable but the owners never ride them (yet they think it is appropriate to tell you your doing everything wrong and telling you how they think your horse should be ridden....if they spent less time being critical they might have time to ride theirs!)

The other girl only rides a couple times a week but her horse is quite nasty out with others. I make the effort to ride 5-6 days a week for at least an hour, it is quite nice really...I get to hack around by myself (which I prefer) and I'm the only one that even uses the jumping paddock!

We dont sound quite as bad as your yard, but yes I do sometimes "feel" like I am the only one riding, I am pretty much the only one who pushes the boundarys ie riding through roadworks and the City Center ect ect, a couple of others have "occasionly" come with me but most of the time do it on my own.
I will normally ride whatever the weather if I want to ride, icy slippy snowy whatever, but even I have had to curtail it in this weather, but some of that is down to work, been a bit manic being a plumber/heating engineer so not enough time or energy after work, not ridden for 11 days now, "hopeing" to ride tommorw if the phone doesn't ring.

well its only me and YO
we ride everyday as long as its not frozen/ice on the school.
we are quite similar and its nice to bounce ideas off each other etc.
been at places where horses arent ridden, overfed, over rugged and stabled 24/7...horrid. dont mind them not being ridden but let them move about outside!!!

Neither do I!!! My yard IS odd.

I only ride at the weekends at the moment (work 45 mins from yard/home so it's dark when I go to work and when I get back) as we have no facilities. Once it's light enough I'll ride everyday. I have horses because I like riding so do as much as I can.

I ride, and one other girl with her two horses, the two ponies that are in the stable block with us do when the weather is good, but that's pretty much it. I think there is another who will ride once we have a school, but there are two horses who's owners i've only seen two or three times since the summer.

at my old yard it was just my one horse who is only rising 2,
her daughters horse that i must have seen daughter ride twice in the year or so i was their
yo has old brood mare not ridden
ex riding school horse never ridden
her beloved horse who she never rode the whole time i was their
her 'project horse' who i have never seen be ridden
her youngster that turned 4 last yr who she was going to be breaking in (i think she lunged her twice)
a horse she has on loan!!?? i've seen her ride it a few times
and a tiny pony that was also supposed to be a project to sell on and she has now had him for 5yrs!
i seriously dont get it

I remember when I was at uni, and horseless, having sold my show ponies, I got friendly with an elderly woman who owned a 3 Shetlands an a 16hh warmblood nearby. Said horse was a 16hh warmblood and then 7 years old, and unbroken. I suggested I help her with him but she was reluctant. (I think because I'm small I don't inspire confidence in some people!) I was told she had died about 5 years later by someone else in the village, the horses were all gone. I wonder what happened to that horse, but surely a keen young university student helping out would have been preferable to an large unbroken 12 year old horse?

Yes, its one of the things I love about my yard. Almost everyone does various stuff with their horses.

On my last yard, you got disapproving looks and comments if you rode for more than half an hour/when it was drizzling/after 6 o'clock etc, etc.

Most people just wanted to drink tea and chat, but I can't understand why its worth paying the costs of horse keeping for that!

To some of us our horses are pets.

It really doesn't matter to everyone that their horses are ridden

On my yard, its about 30 horses, I would say I know of 2/3rds who ride regularly. Some I have never seen or known to ride their horses and some just a couple of times in the time I have been at my yard, which in total (left for a while then returned) is just under 2yrs

ETS: I don't care what others do, as long as they look after their horses they can do what they like. I like to do whatever I wish, if that's riding or not. Generally I have only hacked at weekends over the last couple of years over winter, in summer I will ride 2 evenings on average also. I am busy with college two nights a week so the other 3 week nights I want to be at home chilling in winter!

THATS ME I am making all sorts of excuses at the moment not to ride (to myself and trying to justify it) as its cold, my horses are all up for it and its just not fun!

I just am losing the plot with this weather my youngster is like Bambi on ice its scary. Not going to fight it anymore too stressful when the weather turns I will start again don't care what people think they have had enough entertainment watching me trying to work through it..

I'd say we have about 8 people who ride regularly, 6 who don't - some of those just don't seem that interested in being on board and others in that number are those with older horses exercised once a week. We also have 2 horses that are retired. Of those that do ride, 5 of us are over 45! We're usually the only ones around early on the lovely summer mornings getting out riding!

Everyone rides on my yard bar one properly retired horse - and his mum still fusses/walks him and he has a very strict routine. However, at the moment, no one is riding - we are on a hill, school is frozen and its really unsafe to hack out just at the moment - believe me, we kept going for as long as we could - my horse has never had to go wearing so much in the way of protection - even my old knee boots saw the light of day...
