thinking ahead. hopefully not counting my horse-chickens before they've hatched...
Salty is still insured, her current policy runs out at the end of May. I'm probably not going to renew, the only thing she will be doing now is bumbling round in the field, there's an outside chance we may breed again if this one turns out well but not for a year or 2.

I am hoping she has the foal before the 31st just for my own peace of mind o_O

anyway, as I won't be paying her policy I'm wondering whether to just save the money I am currently spending on her premium or whether to insure the foal? it's not a high value foal in terms of breeding but it's my first so i've got the precious first born thing to contend with! I'm assuming foal insurance is probably stupendously expensive? what do other people do?

I don’t think they can be insured under 6months. There are brood mare covers but I’m not sure they include the actual foal.

Hmm. i was looking at KBIS as that's who all my policies are with and they do mortality from 24 hrs and vets fees from 90 days. it's probably stupid money.

Animal friends insure from 30 days old, not sure what they cover and their premiums but they might be worth looking at. They were my insurers with Tilly and were absolutely fantastic all the way through.

Absolutely keep the mare insured until the foal is a month old, it'll make life so much more straightforward if she needs anything doing! And then yes, definitely insure the foal. It's not very expensive if you keep the value down but have it for vets fees and they are at their most likely to need intervention until 3 IMO. I learnt that the hard way when I didnt insure my previous one.

Alice was insured with KBIS from 24 hours, it was under £200.00 but 9 years ago now. She developed a slightly clubbed front foot but specialist foal farrier John Chilman is local to me and sorted her out alongside my own farrier. I then did the physio myself so there was no claim. Without the support it would have been a claim.

thanks TM, I am someone who prefers to insure because I'm better with predictable costs and quite risk averse. I will give KBIS a bell on Tuesday and see what they can sort out for me :)

IHW i thought it would probably be crazy money hence asking. but Salty's premium actually went down this year on the renewal invitation which seemed crazy but prompted me to think about it.

Nova's was about £400, I insured him from about 8 weeks as he travelled to futurity and I didn’t want to go without cover, it's expensive when they're very young. I went through Julie Andrews

I insured mine with NFU from birth or closest to it I could get :) one was insured for 3x the stud fee as her mum wasn't insured and the other for same price as mum was insured for which was less than 3x the stud fee :)
thanks that's really helpful as I spoke to KBIS today to renew saltys and ask about foal ins... was wondering how to work out the value.

I haven't bred foals for quite a few years now but when I did I insured them with NFU. The earliest cover could start was from 30 days old. Very glad I did as my first foal had a field accident at 6 weeks and racked up a hefty vet's bill which the insurance covered. I just used to insure for the value of the stud fee. I keep my foals and always intend to up their insurance value once they are in work but never get round to doing it.
