Do people loan yearlings?!

Really random question but my 16 month old girlie needs someone who can offer her more time than im able to give her at the moment (shes a fully fledged star in everyway) but i was thinking if i could find her a nice loan home with someone who can spend more time with her then that'd be ideal.

Do people do that?

Wasn't there a post here a while ago, I think they do if they have a youngster who needs young company.

If they were happy to break her in etc then i would have no problem letting her stay, shes much too small for me but has sentimental valve so could never be sold.
 
I'm sure if you stipulate everything you have said then someone would be interested, might take a while to find the right home but there are people out there that can't afford/don't want to buy but would love a young horse to bring on and maybe break to keep as thier own. You can only try and see, my friend put her unsound mare up for loan assuming people would want her as a brood mare and got so many people just lloking for a nice horse they could spend time with and keep as a pet, not much different with a yearling (though she might be a bit more fesity

I think I would be very careful who I had handling my yearling, to be honest.

IMO it is important in the early years that they can be handled firmly by someone who knows what to do with a bit of babyish high spirits. I would not want them to go to someone as a pet.

Just my opinion though.
 
Sorry I should have been more clear, these were all experinced horse people who didn't ride anymore for different reasons. Just becasue someone chooses to keep a horse as a pet doesn't mean they are going to let it walk over the top of them or teach it silly tricks. It could well mean they are going to spend lots of time handling the youngster and giving it a great life experince. Just my opinion though!
 
Yes, i would have. I had a lovely yearling and wanted another to keep him company tilll he matured, some one for him to play with & just be a baby with, i would have been happy to take one and hand it back @ breaking time because i know i then wouldent have the time for both! I am far to protective of him to send him away to stud etc, as it is a bought another yearling a pony who i hope my sisters kids will ride & my dad will drive in a few years. i now have a lovely set up my 2 yearlings and my old mare who looks after them:-)
 
lol - fair enough & well put! My reply was more to the OP though. I do worry that if you put a yearling up for loan then you will get people who think it is nice to look after a 'baby horse' but won't know anything about how.

Perhaps a sharer would be a a better idea - then you can keep the control.
