Do people prefer indoor or outdoor stables?

I prefer indoor, but before i saw the ones at the yard i freelanced at i prefered outdoor. This was a very big barn with stables down both sides, very wide isle, very high roof and the stabes at both ends had a door on the outside and a door on the inside :)
 
I love good outdoor stables with a big overhang and nice view but we have ours in a barn as we're on the top of a hill and get some horrible weather in winter. It's much nicer to be able to do everything under one roof and I'm sure the horses appreciate the extra shelter. Stays much shadier in the summer too. So there are pros and cons to both - depends on how they're done really. :)
 
we've american barn stables but with a window cut on the outside wall in each one, best of both worlds!
 
Good outdoor stables with running water and electric and a decent overhang with outdoor lighting and a concreted yard in front for easy cleaning. Warm in winter and cool in summer and good views so can not only see neighbours but lots of other stuff.
 
Definitely outdoors. We are very lucky to have a stonebuilt, south facing, open fronted barn with stables set back about 5 ft. They have grills on the front, so maximum air flow (the roof is high too), but they are protected from the weather by the overhang. Catch the winter sun, so warm on a cold frosty day, and are shaded from the heat of the summer by the roof. Pretty perfect, and the horses have a nice view too.
 
I think me and my boots preferred the yard which had a lovely indoor arrangement. Plenty of space and air too. Having said that I'm 100% sure the horse prefers her new outdoor one. Seriously fresh air and plenty to look at. She's much more chilled out in general and my boots are much muckier!:rolleyes:
 
Indoor. I've tried both and I just prefer indoor - My horse is currently stabled in what used to be a dairy barn, now converted into stables. Nice in winter and in the rain, but also lovely and cool in the summer - I find it much cooler than the outdoor stable she used to have! Also there are windows to help airflow.
 
Indoor.

Why?

I live in a windtunnel, outdoor stalls would be utter hell.

-10C is a good day in winter, 25C average in summer, barn is 10C +/- outside temp.

No flies.

I don't have to shovel snow from doors in a barn, don't get wet/cold/blown over mucking out either.

Convenient for Vet, Farrier

Everything under one roof.
 
Indoor - but that's cause my best friends yard has lovely indoor stables, big and airy and the horses like them. Brilliant for vet/farrier etc xx
 
I like a stable with a rubber matted yard about the same size as the stable outside it, the stable door is never shut & the horses spend time in their yards chatting to friends then go back in to sleep & eat at any time. They seem very chilled out with this freedom as they are in their yard/stable at night all winter. Plus side is they toilet in their yards not in their stables ! Great.
 
We have a lovely american style barn, and there's even windows on the outside to let the sunlight in. Only down side is in winter when the windows are shut because it's just so dark and the lighting is very poor.
 
I much prefer indoor. They seem really cosy in the winter, and more sheltered from wind than outdoor. Ours have a huge aisle. And my boy is so much calmer being able to see all the other horses in there. He loves his indoor stable!
