I have one I am letting go - in part because she is physically a tad big for me. Partly because I'm after something a bit zingier to event next year.

Has anyone ever swapped their horse for another?

I'm not talking dealers as such, because she is worth something being so safe, and dont want to necessarily get half what she's worth in exchange, so to speak. She's also never put a foot wrong, and I have a morale duty to her to find her a loving home.

There must be people out there who have a horse they are letting go because beloved horse is too quirky yet talented for them, that want something top end RC but safe?

Surely there has to be pitfalls i havent thought of.....it seems such an easy option, without having to put up with endless viewings that wont necessarily go anywhere?

I nearly did it a couple of years ago, I had something a bit too much for me and the girl I was going to swap with had something that was too small for her, it very nearly happened but unfortunately mine wasn't quite tall enough for her in the end, we stayed friends on facebook though and she has a lovely horse now, as do I! :)

Think it can work ok, you just need to be totally honest with each other. Try preloved and I think horseexchange have a tick box for swaps under their searches..

I did once I swopped a nice little mare 8yo for a strapping 5 yo ISH the mare bored me witless and ISH was terrifying his novice owner with his napping and general bad behaviour it was arranged by a dealer I know who was disposing of the naughty ISH they knew I was bored of the lovely quiet well behaved mare I had produced and rang up and said how about this for an idea .

I have a friend who swapped her very pretty, steel grey TB youngster for a fiery welsh x Irish gelding. The TB was too quiet for her but gorgeous to look at. She's now gone showing and the gelding she brought on and sold to one of her liveries.

Yupp I just swapped my 4 year old exmoor to a stud who gave me a 15hh 3 year old connie x ID/TB in return (I chose her out of a load of young stock she had available.)
So far so good.

No, I advertised my mare and it just so happened the stud owner saw her advert and responded. I didn't have her advertised as a broodmare but exmoor mares are rare so sought after. She offered an experienced home where lola would have a home for life, plus thought I was getting a really good deal as connie x's seem to be real popular.

I haven't but a friend did. She swapped her 15.2 4 yo naughty gelding who needed consistent work to behave nicely for a 14.2 8 yo bsja showjumper who became a bit "frazzled" by all that competing so wanted a step down. The showjumper's owner wanted a new challenge and my friend wanted something she could rely on to behave if she left him a couple of days without work. So far so good, both horses and owners are happy :)

Have done 2 very successful swaps over the years. Only problem was my insurance company, who wanted proof of value when I took out a policy and stupidly mentioned it was a swap. Both swaps were word of mouth.

Theres a facebook page called 'horses for sale and loan'.. quite a few swaps appear on there, may be worth a look or posting an ad x

I would love to swap my mare for something boring! she is a quick learner (which works both ways)! and she is bored to tears with me walking and trotting her around! she loves jumping but I dont! and as a older rider want to have a steady ride around the countryside.

Ive done a couple of successful swaps. I swapped a fiery chestnut section D mare for my Arab gelding, best thing i ever did. It was totally unexpected, i saw the Arab advertised for sale & thought he sounded nice, so called the owner & while i was talking to her i jokingly asked if she fancied a swap for the cob mare, suffice to say the rest is history & he is still with me 10yrs later :)
The other swap we did was when we were moving back to West Wales & had a TB mare & foal, we couldnt find turnout for them, so i was quite worried, a friend of mine had really fallen for the mare & she was trying to sell her trailer as well.....we were looking for a trailer. So it made sense really, the mare is still with her & the foal is a big strapping thing now.

Hi, I read your enquiry and although I have never swapped a horse, I am looking at doing so. Just thought it was worth a mention to you-I am not sure where you are based or what you are looking to swap, but I have a lovely 15.3 appaloosa sports horse that I am sadly going to have to look at selling/swapping as I do not have then time to do her justice as she has bags of potential. I have owned her since she was 8 months and she is 5 now. Backed and schooled on, she has just had 6 months off and is being brought back into work now. Let me know if you are interested in knowing any more. I come from an experienced BSJA/RC background and I am confident she is a serious competition potential. Thanks
