Do people swap horses?

totally depends on the circumstances!

but in theory yes i would!

I have, on both occasion s it went t*ts up, the horses I was given were crocks, but then I was only 15 and 3 yrs experience versus 20 now

I think in all honesty trying to find the exact horses the both of you want is not an easy task. Not to say it cant work though Im sure

I would do given the right situation, infact it maybe the only way that i will be able to get my daughter the new horse she needs.

I did swaped my 12hh pony for a 14hh registered unbroken welsh cob.

So far its working out great hes turning out to be just the kind of horse i wanted and my mares providing hours of enjoyment for the other womans children. We still keep in touch and email photos etc. only problem was i had to do all the transporting and it was to wales.

I guess it could have gone badly but i personally have had a good experience!

Yes, I swapped a four year old filly who I had bred and backed but had not made either the height (for my 6' daughter) or the weight for me for a chunky cob plus a couple of hundred quid. Really good deal cos we've had far more enjoyment out of the cob.

I'm thinking about putting my 2 year old cob up for a swap. He'd be amazing for showing until he's broken, great for jumping as I've already seen he has a lovely one on him (whilst jumping over a gate...) and I expect good dressage prospect as he's very smart. I just don't think I have the experience to bring him on to his full potential, and if I do keep him, he'd probably just be a hacking horse, which seems such a waste...

I'd want to swap for a lovely hacking horse instead, that I could do fun rides and hunting with etc. but not really compete.

Does that sound like a viable swap?

As long as I knew the person that I was swapping with reasonably well, I dont see why not

That's what I thought but it wasn't as easy as that! It was part of our contract that we would give the swap a fortnight before deciding for definite and if either of us were unhappy, we would swap back and in my case, I would keep the youngster until D had sold the mare and could afford him. I swapped a homebred 3 year old for a nice TBx mare, supposed to have been there and got the t-shirt which the owner had had an accident with and as a consequence lost her confidence on her. She wasn't a bad ride but we rubbed each other up the wrong way and after working and riding so many horses, I knew she wasn't for me; told D within a week and she refused to swap back! Because she was at a private yard, I wasn't able to go and get him back (I took legal advice on that!) and I had to sell the mare instead; probably didn't lose anything on him but it did leave a very nasty taste in the mouth from someone who I had considered a good friend.
Funny enough, the last laugh was against D because I was contacted by his owner years later (she sold him on and because I had asked in his passport for any new owners to get in touch) and was actually given him back when she emigrated to NZ! He is now 19, is out on permanent loan with his soul mate and they do all fun things and hunting!

possibly...totally depends on what is out there i guess...is it the coloured in your siggy? he's stunning
grin.gif
why not sell him and buy another though? that could be easier?
smile.gif

Indeed he is. Yeah, he is gorgeous and he's coming on so well, I just really don't have the facilities to make the most of him. I have no transport to take him showing and can't afford hire fees, which is really frustrating because I think he'd do really well. Thought about selling him but not sure what I'd put him up for, and wondered if a swap would be easier to get something I could happy hack with.

Tbh, I don't know what I'm going to do. I've been panicking over monies and things because I'm about to buy a house with my bf, although I've got everything in for him for the winter. And then I wonder if I'm just not experienced enough to be bringing on a youngster and am really missing riding. *sigh* I think I think too much lol

do you know anyone experienced who could help you? if not then i'd think about selling him and getting some money together for a nice happy hack for yourself...

Sounds like a perfect ending!!

Yes I did and it worked well. I swapped a (too big for me) 17.1hh for a 15.2hh (too small for her). We had both bought them as youngsters and mine grew way to big - both parents were 16hh!

If the situation is right and the other horse is what you want - go for it. It worked for us.

I would consider it. Have wondered if there is someone out there who is overhorsed by a youngster with potential who might like D, the professional moocher.

Ah, nice to know this may not be a mad idea then
smile.gif
I just think that a youngster for my first horse possibly wasn't the best idea, but I followed my heart instead of my head....

i have, although i ended up having him back as well as the horse i swapped for as she couldnt afford him.

I did once, some time ago, when I was a teenager. I swapped a safe (put my novice, unhorsey, sister on him), but ever so slightly quirky 14.2, (who could jump like a stag, but after re-schooling I decided although he could, he didn't like it, and deserved a quiet life hacking etc). I swapped him with a "friend" for her childrens' NF pony as I thought that secured him a good long term home, and gave me something more sellable even if it meant at a loss.

Just a matter of weeks later, she advertised him for sale as a child's pony - when I questioned her about it, then she walked him out my yard (along with her heavily in foal mare). I heard that the foal was hanged by the new YO's incompetence, but I still don't know what happened to that lovely little horse I foolishly parted with...

Oh no, I'm very sorry to hear that

I guess it's just such a risk, because anyone can say anything with no intention of sticking to it *hugs*

If I was to sell my boy, so I could get something more suitable for me, how much do you think he'd be worth?

A little about him to go on...

He's just turned 2 (late foal, born 1st September), is a traditional coloured (bay tobiano) cob with lovely marking, CHAPS registered, just over 14h at the moment, has just been micro-chipped, wormed and had his second lots of tet and flu jabs. He's good to handle, can be strong but doesn't try to pull away, can be a bit of a pain to catch some days though has been very good the past couple of weeks and I intend to work on this with him, quite happy with traffic of all sorts, wouldn't say bombproof yet but definitely on the right track, is quite good with picking up his feet, is good in the stable and with lots of noise going on around him. He has massive potential for showing, has good confirmation and comes up a treat with a proper scrub lol. Would also think he'd be great for jumping, dressage, xc and hunting. He's been lunged a couple of times and is fab on the left reign, needs a lot more work on the right though. Happily trots in hand on the left or right hand side, doesn't pull off and will slow if you ask him to. Has had a saddle on him and happily takes a bit. He can be a pain to load, although only took 20 minutes last time (which is good for him and also another I intend to work on).

What would you price him at?
