I have a gelding who injured his DDFT and has been on field rest for a long time. I really need to get him back into work and loaned out as I can't keep paying for him to laze around stuffing his face!
I obviously need to bring him back into work slowly and thinking perhaps 3-4 months to get him hacking fit provided the tendon holds up.
He is currently on resting field livery a long way away and if I bring him back I really don't want to get stuck with mucking out and paying for hay/bedding over the winter.

So question is, do people take on loans in Oct/Nov time? It would really only be for hacking as I don't want to risk damaging the tendon again with jumping etc

There are people out there that would, one of mine went out on loan last Oct until March as she only wanted a winter loan although he was only a companion/light hack.

Yes as long as you were upfront about how long the loan was for (just over winter or longer term) I dont see why not.

Personally I would not be happy if I loaned a horse, put time money and effort into looking after it over winter only for the owner to request it back in the spring.

This happened to a friend of mine a few years ago. Got the horse going and looking lovely over a really cold hard winter and then the owner turned round and unexpectedly asked for the horse back in the April (claimed she had to sell the horse) She then spent the summer doing dressage and local showing before re-advertising it for loan in the autumn.

Sure people do, due to youngsters and broken riding horse I'm going to be looking for a loan. I'd be looking for just a winter loan as my youngsters will be ready to start in the spring.

I would think the majority would want a longer loan though.

Yes people do but a lot also come up for loan October time due to students going away to university so that is something to bear in mind, there will probably be quite a lot on the market!

Thanks all. More positive than I thought.
It would be a long term loan, no danger of me wanting him back after winter!! (although he is lovely)
