do people think you are rich because you have horses

I must say I always used to think - 'Oh what a lovely pony she must be mega rich' and although everyone's saying horse owners are not rich. I'm still mixed views.

Obviously i'm not doubting what everyone is saying but me and my mum were talking about owning a horse today and we tried working out costs. Eg, Insurance, vetting, buying a horse, livery, shoeing etc..

It does seem like a massive expense! I do agree with the 'I work all the time to pay for my horse'.. That's why I got a job. Although, not quite there yet!:P

I've been stunned by the earnings some people on here are stating - and managing to run a horse as well! I earn a lot more than the figures stated earlier in the thread, and there's no way I could afford to have a horse!

That made me go and check out Rightmove, and it has struck me that if I moved elsewhere in the country, I wouldn't have to work all the hours god made, 7 days a week, just to be able to afford to rent a two bedroom flat, feed my child and run a car! I could have a horse too!

Just need to find a cheap contract killer to despatch the ex husband, who is putting the kibosh on me moving away, and jobs a goodun!

I think a lot of people who have horses are rich but there are also people who are middle income as well. I doubt anyone is actually proper poor eg living on benefits in a council house and struggling to pay for the bills for basic food with no luxuaries.

horses are a luxuary as are of course fags and booze. I have yet to meet someone with a horse who is proper poor. If you have no money because you have spent it all on horses that is different to being poor really as it is a lifestyle choice.

if anyone asks me if I am rich I say no but that horses are an expensive hobby so they do take up most of my spare cash but I don't have my own property or children (which people think is quite odd). I would never pretend that keeping horses is cheap even with a good doer native pony living out it is still expensive.

But you might find that although the houses are cheaper so are the wages and it might be harder to find work...

I was just thinking the exact same thing.

People do seem to think I'm rich because I'm a Tory (I'm on the local district council). I've had people say things like "it's alright for you - you've got a big house". I think I said "Do I? Where are the keys?" I actually live in a council flat :)

I find it really annoying, truth be told.

Yes, although how on earth anyone can make that mistake considering I live in a council house and drive an Almera with almost 100,000 miles on the clock I have no idea :D

I dont drink, I dont smoke and I dont do debt - if I want something I save for it - I work 28 hours a week and am a full time student with 2 kids, 2 cats and a dog as well as my horse - but I work hard and go without things like new clothes and nights out and treats for myself to provide for my kids and my animals - I am so far removed from being wealthy Im not even on the same continent :D

Yes they do. But i have to work my butt off to be able to afford it and work stupid hours that many people wouldnt do! It annoys me when ppl always say i'm 'minted' but if they wanted to trade places with me i'm sure they would run a mile!

I think its mainly based on the fact the non-horsey assume all horse owners must own their own emmerdale style home farm & be in the same wage category as a race horse owner at royal ascot. People are often suprised our 2 cost less to keep each week than a couple of nights out a week would. Most working people have a disposable income nowadays, low earning horse owners just spend it differently. What others view as necessary I count as a luxury & do without to fund daughter & I a pony each.
