Do some boy dogs never cock their leg?

Make the most of it - our Rhodesian Ridgeback starting cocking his leg before he was 6 months old (which is the youngest we've personally had a dog cock his leg) but how we wish he wouldn't. He continually cocks his leg on the feed mangers left outside the stables soaking, the water buckets, and worst of all - the bales of shavings left outside each stable. There's nothing worse than picking up a bale and wee comes pouring off onto your hands! It doesn't matter what it is, he will cock his leg at it. Thankfully our two year old GSD doesn't follow suit - and occasionally he will still squat down to wee.
 
Lol well he lived with cats for the first year of his life and he does act like them sometimes!! He likes to sleep along the top of the sofa!!

He now lives with bes who obviously squats but she marks when out on walks so you'd think he'd pick it up!!!
 
As my dog got older he stopped cocking his leg.

He was in the vets lots as a baby puppy for waterworks and, er, 'undercarriage' problems and I thought it was due to that, so glad to hear it probably isn't!

Gina, my mate's x-breed used to cock her leg, I thought it was hilarious!
 
We have a bitch who has always cocked her leg - we got her from an animal sanctuary when she was very small and we think she was kennelled with a dog - so picked up the habit
 
I would have thought it must also be realted to when / if they are castrated?

If they are castrated before they start cocking leg - then there is no reason why they would start unless they learnt off another dog?

Mine cocks his leg - but he is an entire male - so would have expected him to

I suspect from the info i got from his owner that he was probably castrated as soon as possible when she bought him. I got him at just over a year old so don't know for definate
 
A friend's dog is like this, always squats to wee. However my spaniel pup has cocked his leg since he was about 7 months old. He nearly fell over the first time he did it and it was very funny to watch.

Just to add, the 8yo lab bitch that I have does sometimes cock her leg.
 
I hope my Lurcher pup cocks his leg as my garden is a brown mess from all his squatting wees! Hes nearly 9 mth old and has half cocked his leg on the odd thing.
 
My spaniel is nearly 11 and has never really learnt to cock his leg properly! Only does it when marking and not very good at it! The rest of the time he squats - put it down to the fact when he was a puppy he was surrounded by bitches. My sisters lab - who is v dominant - cocks her leg all the time!
