Do strict dress codes stifle sponsorship opportunities?

just wondering what peoples thoughts were on this...

Do you think the strict dress codes in show jumping and dressage diminish the opportunities for riders to get sponsorship as they can not wear product related colours?

And in turn do you think this is a missed opportunity for getting greater investment (particularly from non-equine sources) in to the sport we participate in?

I think that we do need to change the dress code in order to be considered more of a "sport" than just a hobby. In no other sport, do you have to wear impractical clothing purely for tradition. Hence, why I am a big supporter of any new modern clothing materials and styles.

Its not so much colours etc. but I think things like the BSJA jacket should be encouraged as you are allowed (to a degree) to put sponsors logos on it I believe.

For my sponsors, I wear their branded jacket over my normal competition jacket to warm up in etc. but as soon as I'm in the ring, there is no branding on me or the horse at all. My sponsors did want their logo on my saddlecloth but where put off by the rules the BSJA and BE stipulate (and the fact that they can both differ which is no use when I compete in both!).

This is my point, since most photos in H&H and other publications are of people in the ring, then the sponsors should be able to have their baranding seen; like in motor sport or football. Why would some one sponsor you if they can not get the reward of their name appering in the press in association with your sucess.

They do get the reward of their name appearing in the press, at least the decent sponsers do anyway. Ever seen the caldene adverts with Ellen Whitaker etc. Equissage also use her on their advertising etc. Often the riders wagons have the logos on as their are no restrictions on this. Riders are allowed to have a small sponsership logo on their jackets in showjumping. Many of the sponsers in showjumping are horseproduct related, and so they can promote their product through the fact that a good rider uses it. Also, there are no rules regarding overcoats, that can be worn in warmups, and also sponsership logos can be worn on horses rugs. So really, the two minutes while you are in the ring doesn't matter! I think it would look a bloody mess if riders started riding in multicoloured anoraks with brands written all over them!

sponsership logos can also be worn on logos, although I think their may be a restirction on the size of it. Tim Stockdale for example clearly has Fresh Direct on his numnahs.

Couldn't help but notice in last weeks H&H that she was called 'Ellen Whittaker' on the Caldene ad!

I have numnahs with sponsor logo on both sides which is quite large. you can see above it fills most of the visable area, also have some in black with a very bright logo on.
Rugs with sponsor logo on
Jackets with logo on front and back
waistocasts with the same

I have never had BSJA say anything about the size of logo on my numnahs.

The sizing of sponsership logos on a saddle cloth is not to exceed 200 square cms (whatever that is! lol ... I think that's actually quite a big area anyway). 8x6cms on jackets at the height of the breast pocket. You are also allowed up to 3 logos 14x6cms on right hand jacket sleeve and logos 3cms in height and 5.5cms width on shirt collars
