I was so closeto getting him a pink venus but I couldn't justify the price! I go through 2 disposabale ones every shave...........He has some serious whiskerage going on
No, I never cut them off, and in fact I am sure I read somewhere that in one country in Europe it is actually illegal to cut them off! They help the horse to feel when he is grazing and moving about so unless you are showing, leave them be
its very interesting to hear ur responses cause i would never thought about cuttin off my horses whiskers, it doesn't seem right to do that lol!! but fair enough for showing purposes

Horses with no whiskers don't go bump in the night.

I disagree.
I think horses with no whiskers go bump in the night. And in the day. And in their stable. Etc.
Cutting them off could be viewed as the equivalent of blinding them...as they feel rather than see.
So I don't - and aren't showing judges backward if they don't know that?!

I have known some people who have cut the horses whiskers and then the horse has bashed it's nose on the bucket when feeding as they cannot feel the bottom! I think they should be left on. I wouldn't touch my horses' ones they are there for purpose!

Ok, ok, I should've said 'Of the countless horses I've known with no whiskers, none have ever gone bump in the night'
Thats not to say I don't disagree with it though - I don't the whiskers off mine as I just don't see the need, he is still gorgeous with whiskers
However seeing as he is prone to stepping onto things/himself/falling/generally bashing himself maybe by some perverse logic if I cut them off he would be fine?
yes for showing, otherwise i don't bother! i have a hogged cob who, at the mo is totally in the rough, whiskas and all, until i get my blades back that is!!
i have never seen them bump into things either.
No, absolutely not and my YO used to do my horses behind my back as she hates them
I gave her an earful! I am the only person on my yard to leave them, but I think it is because we always left them in Spain as it helped to discourage sand colic (if/when horses were turned out it was in the sand arenas and if there were no whiskers they ate closer to the ground...if that makes sense!)
