As a result of another forum debate. Do vets check passports before treating horses. My vets in Scotland were most particular but I am told that most DON'T.

This came about through discussion with YO who has a client's horse which is still without a passport after four months on the yard. Apparently a lot of it about??

What do your vets do?

My vets have only seen my horses passports when vaccinations are due, so they can write it in, never asked for it any other time.

have just had my horse in vet hospital for chip removal from stifle and i had to leave her passport with her whilst she was in. Very efficient vets overall tho'.

Basically just at vaccinations, but then my vets do know I have passports for them, so I don't have a problem with them coming along for something else and not insisting on seeing the passport before they do anything to the animal. I only have the 2 - if it was a big yard with lots of comings and goings and not the owner in attendance, then I could understand why the vet might want to see a passport before proceeding. Quite right to leave the passport with the horse at vet hospital though. That makes perfect sense.

My vet asked me some years ago whether I had a passport or not, as without one he couldn't supply the drugs (definitely would prevent entry to the foodchain). Since then we have changed to a new practice and no-one even mentioned it.

Yes and won't provide drugs without seeing it and checking that the food chain section had been signed. Wouldn't even sedate to have wolf teeth done without checking it.

Mind you, when I did change of ownership for the new horse the PIO sent back the passport with this section replaced with a blank form which rather makes a mockery of signing them out of the food chain for life.

None of the local vets have ever asked to see them, only one who does is the one that does vaccs.

However my horse wasn't allowed to be brought off the box at Rossdales until they'd seen her passport
