Do warmbloods REALLY keep growing until they are 8 or 9 ?

youre more than welcome - couldnt find mine the other day (ive put it somewhere safe) so had to guestimate using the smaller one.
Lol at you with the saddle - just like my mate trying to rug my girly up - very much pmsl when I see her try her hardest

LOL I just throw the rug at Beau and hope for the best! Im sure he just rolls his eyes at me!

Oh no not somewhere safe! Im still looking for things I put somewhere safe years ago!

Might be worth trying a Wintec Wide then, if only until he stops growing? I think they're quite straight-cut...let me know if you'd like me to try to find a pic of my ponio in his and PM it to you!

I'd be inclined to agree with P_F - if he is quite nicely developed now muscle-wise I wouldn't think growing another inch would affect his saddle fit. He is more likely to change shape through a change in workload. He does look so different though - well done he's gorgeous

Thanks jupthemoon, yes I *think* he might still get a bit broader yet though, he still has quite a bit of topline to build, he hasnt been in work consistently since we got him, destroyed hooves, bites etc.

He's a big lad! He's looking super though, all credit to you and I think it's a bonus when they're nice to be around too - you're very lucky to have such a lovely horse!
My boy is believed to be WB x ID (although lots of people have said he looks like section D?!) and he was bought at 4.5yrs as 16.1hh and was all legs! He's now 6yrs and looks twice the horse he was when I bought him and stands at about 16.3hh! That probably doesn't help you as Beau is the same age as Bailey is now but I'd say the bigger they are the slower they are to mature so it's quite possible he'll keeping growing a bit each year til he reaches 8 or 9!
Some pics so you can see the difference!

Aww he is gorgeous. He does look like he has a bit of welsh in him!

Yes Im very lucky, he has never put a foot wrong and is a very loving affectionate and loyal horse, thankfully, otherwise I would have no chance LOL.

Thanks!
It just makes them a pleasure when they're loving and co-operative doesn't it?! At 18hh is a bl**dy good job he is well behaved!
Are you tall - he doesn't look like he's totally dwarfing you in the pics?!
Well, the difference is amazing with your boy and in only 7 months - you should feel really chuffed that you've done that for him! I'm sure he'll repay you 100 times over though!

I wouldnt get a saddle made until he is at least nine. He may stop growing up but will go outwards with muscle etc. At least at 9 you will know there is not much to change.

You will find a saddle that fits now, just might have to look around a bit.

He is gorgeous!

Oh yes, I see what you mean!!!!!! He's huge!
I think he looked really young & immature in the 1st pics but looks like a proper grown up horse in the recent ones! I can see why you bought him though - he has a lovely kind eye!

Thanks FF, I remember how many you were trying for the gorgeous Bruce, its expensive business!

Yes I agree he will still change muscle wise for quite a while yet, saddlers seem so expensive even for used saddles around here, ebay is great, but of course its the hassle of selling on loads of saddles that dont fit.

I bought a 3 yr old WB (now 4yrs) in April who is currently 17hh but the vet thinks he's still got growing to do, so not sure how big he'll end up! he agreed that they mature around 8yrs.

Warmbloods and warmblood types definately keep growing until about 8 or 9. We had Murphy measured by the JMB for his showing, he's an ID x Arab so technically ISH. He gained his life height cert at 152cms or 14hh 3 and 3/4 inches I think in English. He then went up a rug size and we measured him without shoes at just under 15.1 and anyone on here that has seen him will vouch that he looks like a good 15.2hh. When we showed him in SHP with all the other 153cms and under's he was one of the biggest by a long shot.
Also mentally I think they mature late too which is why I can't stand seeing people riding them at just 3 years old in draw reins etc expecting them to do extended trot before they can walk in a straight line on a loose rein.

If you buy a good quality well known branded saddle you will nearly always get your money back if you have to sell it on. Don't get a very heavy saddle otherwise you will have to start weight training just to get it on his back!

yes thats him!

Well OH (who was previously scared of horses) learned to ride on him, Beau was that much of a good boy, they have had great fun galloping around together.
OH is going to learn to jump yet, as we want to do some hunter trials together, Lance has done all the local ones so many times he doesnt need telling which way to go, so will be a good babysitter for beau.

If Beau stops thinking of excusesto havetime off we want to do a bit of everything with him really, OH said he even fancies dressage!

The last joints to "close" are the ones in the spine and the general concensus is that whatever some people would like to think, this is about the same for all breeds of horses. This doesn't necessarily mean the horse will get bigger - rate of adding inches is affected by all sorts of factors - but it does mean the horse isn't "finished" and very specific damage to the growing joints is still possible.

Rate of growth is affected by genetics (not breed, family line etc.), and environment. It can slow down if a horse is not having its needs met/suffers and illness, then take off again when the situation improves, so long as the horse is still technically within the growing phase.

Obviously filling out continues much longer and has as much to do with work and environment as genetics. When the skeleton is still growing resources are allocated accordingly and horses often look "gangly" but as that requirement slows down more of the body's resources can be put into muscle etc.

So yes, your horse will still change, probably quite a lot.

yes he will mature both physically and mentally at 8 or 9 try getting a saddler out that will fit him with a wide saddle of good quality with a posibility of having it retreed to a wider fit (done under guarantee by saddle manufacturer) if he needs it sure will not get much wider as muscle growth will dictate size and fit from now on. can recommend black country rainbow tree for wide horses u need a reputable qualified saddler to advise on options though! (friend wrote this for u is master saddler)

I haven't read all the replies but my lad, a KWPN Dutch Warmblood, has 16.1 on his vaccination card filled in when he was just 4 years old. I measure him up at just a tad over 16.2 (he's now 14) so he didn't grow a great deal more after 4. I guess its really gonna depend on each horse.
