I lost my beautiful dog last month, after a long kidney problem, he was 10 yrs old and he was my best friend.
I still have my other dog and i love her dearly, but Troy was one in a million.
My husband wants us to get another dog, but i'm not sure.
Echo seems ok without him, she is 6 mths younger and had always had him there.
Hubby seems to think she would benefit from having another dog, and as he's away all week he would feel better about me having a bigger dog as Echo is a Whippet cross and troy was an Akita.
Would introducing another dog upset Echo? or is it me not wanting to upset her?
We have looked at different breeds, Huskies for their size and presence and Black Russian Terriers for their guarding instinct and non agression.
I would'nt mind going to the local dogs home and find something there, so that is also an option.
I know i will love the new puppy and it will have a great life with us as we will soon be moving to a farm, but i don't want to put Echo's nose out of joint...
What do i do?

It is always a hard decision when thinking of taking on another one when you have lost one.
Your old girl probably wont mind being an only dog, esp as you say she does not show any signs of pining or being on her own.
However if u feel ready for another one and you do sound like u could offer another dog a really good home........maybe yoy shoud look into it.................maybe you shoud think about an older dog, obviously not to old but out of the puppy stages...................she may find a young puppy a little overwheming all the bounciness and energy.............however if u have your heart set on a puppy, you could always crate train the puppy so your bitch coud have her time out when the little monster is in his cage.
I know it does not bear thinking!!! but if u loose her at some stage atleast u will still have one little doggi left to ease the pain.
I would probably go for another dog as opposed to a bitch you may find your bitch wil accept it easier.
You have already had a big dog with your Akita so why not get your self another biggi like you mention, maybe a huski, athough they are quiet a bit different to Akitas they made nice pets in the right hands.
GOOD LUCK XX

I see u are poss moving to a farm

very nice even more reason to think about another doggi, have you thought abouta German Shepherd they make a fantastic all round pet and great guard dog if that is what u are looking for..........maybe think twice about the huski, cos I have read a fair few posts from the experienced huski people saying you need to keep a good eye on them around live stock and need to keep them on a lead all times, I think they have a short attention span when trying to recall pus the mischevious havoc they can cause when off lead ...............I know my mams can be a little b***er when he wants to be, as opposed to my Akita who is very solem and well behaved.

like I said GOOD

Sorry to hear about you losing your dog and I'm glad the other dog isn't pining.

It's a really hard decision to make but I tend to feel that older dogs don't cope so well with a new puppy. If she was 7-8 maximum I'm sure she would enjoy it but in my experience the older dogs don't always benefit from the company of a pup especially if you are going for a larger breed. Perhaps a quiet adult dog would be a better option. Also bear in mind that, as you are moving house, there will be a lot of changes for her to cope with.

You know your dog best, if she is still full of life and up for a good bounce then a puppy may suit her, but if she prefers the quite life then perhaps she will be happier on her own.

Good luck with your decision.

Oooh pray tell!!
I really like these dogs, they were bred by the Russians as "manstoppers" All the guarding instincts of the Sheperd, but with out the aggression.
A friend of ours has a relation who breeds them, but is not breeding this year, so we would be interested in finding a breeder who someone can recommed.
Please could you PM me the details, we would be looking for a dog, not a bitch as our current one is a bitch.
