we've had loads of rain lately, i don't mind riding in it when its not hammering down. what do you all do? wait until rain goes or ride whatever the weather? also..can you ride/school on grass after alot of rain or does it get too slippy-this may be a stupid question but I'm sure someone said not to, so thought id ask :rolleyes: x
 
I ride in the rain, just keep spare pair of jods in car just in case really bad. Tend not to go in fields if its been really bad as they are on red clay so red clay and a grey pony do not mix at all!
 
Not generally, I'm a total softy and I also hate getting my tack wet (just got my first ever brand new saddle so am v sniffy about harming it in any imagined way!).
If the ground has been dry for a while, then just gets a bit of rain then it can get really slippy, but tbh if you are hacking and just having a bit of a canter then you should be fine, for schooling or jumping on such ground then you might find it too slippy (I would avoid it as I worry about them having a slip and putting their back out or something).
 
I used to ride in all weather nothing fazed me except thunder of course! Not so much now so I am moving to a yard with an indoor school :p

It is better to not ride on grass after rain but if you have to you can just don't do tight turns or go too fast, and if you jump I would reccomend studs.
 
Fair weather rider here!! If its not beautiful sunshine (or, at least not raining!) we do not go out! When i was younger i'd ride in any weather, i've gone soft in my old age lol!!
 
I don't mind the rain. There is nothing like going for a ride and coming back wet, to make you feel like a horse person. Who else does their hobby in the rain?
 
I ride in the rain... but only on horses I compete -it's not my idea of the most fun -- if it's totally hammering down I don't tho... but you can usually catch a dry spell if you're careful mind you me getting the tack out is usually a cue for the heavens opening...

Um, why would you not ride in the rain?! Are you allergic?! Really, you won't melt. Yes it's not the nicest, but we live in the UK. If we didn't ride in the rain, we barely get in the saddle!

Don't be such a wuss! Plus, you can't pick the weather at competitions.

I wouldn't ride on grass if it's been hamnmering down (jump or school). Hacking is fine.
 
All the time :p My horse probbaly hates it but once I have groomed and tacked up nothing will stop me! I mainly hack though if its raining
 
Living near the lake district we sort of have to. But at the moment we're not, we're having a school built but we only have the fields. It's too muddy after a week of rain and set to continue, the horses are almost knee deep in mud and riding just makes the fields worse after the bad weather.
 
Yes, as long as it's not accompanied with strong wind, that sideways stuff...horrible, otherwise I don't mind a nice warm summer rain, prefer that to wind.
 
I'll quite happily ride in rain, sun, snow (although only if its not icy obv), hailstone, wind and we've also been known to hack along in a thunderstorm singing nursery rhymes at the top of our voices to drown out the rumbles!! (more than once!)
I won't ride in a field in the rain, as I'm scared of ours slipping and injuring themselves but I'll school in our outdoor sand arena or ride round the estate with no quibbles :)
 
yeah i dont mind rain as long as its not really heavy(the stuff that stings your face) just wondered what other people do. and now only have field to ride in so didnt know if it woud be safe after loads of rain ect. thanks for replys.

Nope total fairweather only rider me.

More than well aware that neither the horse or myself will melt thank you.

I ride for fun only and getting soaked to the skin riding is not my idea of fun :D

Have tried lunging / schooling on a wet field - not good, both Coco and I were sadly lacking in grass studs!! Won't be doing it again. :p
 
Yup every weather eventuality!

I overcame all the tube stoppages last year to turn up to ride when it was snowing! Got some lovely pictures! The horses need to be exercised no matter what and if I dont show up, it causes a lot a trouble for the troop leaders so Im always there :)

Riding for the army Id get laughed at if I didnt turn up to ride cos it rained! And probably struck off if I did it a lot!

water logged bum,neck and feet,,,never understood how they got wet lol
any way Im only 5ft 3" could shrink,
Wonder if thats whats happened to my jods as they are getting smaller, they get wet in the wash. just a thought

wow riding for the army! how did you get into that? Amd what kind of things do you do-if you don't mind me asking just sounds very interesting :)
 
;) Only if I get caught out! :)

My mare hates it and she's joggy at the best of times, it also trashes my suede saddle, plus getting wet jeans off is a pain.

Do I mind?! :D I could talk about it for days! (in fact I do, to the annoyance of my less horsey friends!)

Im based in London and exercise the Household Cavalry horses in Hyde Park to give them a good run and exercise as the soldiers mostly walk and trot on the daily regimental exercise.

I was very lucky that when I moved down here a friend of mine told me to get in touch with her brother who looked after HHC and recommended me for the civilian riding team. Lots of fun and great parties :)
 
Yep, Obviously is it's hammering down i dont. The weather down here has been slightly unpredictable this week or so, so i've been going out rain or shine. I don't mind too much and nor does my girl.

LMAO. I lasted near Swansea for 9 years. I am/was a hunting addict, and did everything else too, I had to move because I couldn't stand the constant depression (I had SAD 9 months out of 12) and my knees and hips were agony. Now it is either very cold, or very hot, usually sunny and a quarter of the rainfall of Wales...love it, but I do miss Wales, just not the soggy greyness.
 
It rains all winter here in California - so I ride in it. It's not my favorite thing to do - I love riding in a refreshing summer rain but winter rain is cold! But I bundle up and go out and always end up glad I did.

Thanks I do love it.

Nope not my job and I do it for free! To us, it is free riding in Hype Park on wonderful horses and to them we are a huge help as it frees up the soldiers to do other work which they prefer and is more useful all round!

Up at 5am most days Mon-Sat, tack up and groom from 6am, ride 7-8am then at work for 9am (bean counter!)
By 2pm head is on desk snoring!
