do you all ride in the rain?

If I didn't ride in the rain then I wouldn't get to ride much at all!

I ride in any weather, raining heavily, blowing a gale, storms etc. Been out on my 4 year old and got caught in a hail storm with thunder and lightening (it was nice weather when I left the yard!), we couldn't find any tree cover so soldiered on to get back home....luckily he was so brave and knew his job.

I don't MEAN to go out in that kind of weather but I tend to go for long hacks and the weather can change so quickly. My horses are well behaved in that kind of weather as I would expect them to be, although when the weather is nice they will spook at a new flower on the path!!! :)

well i do if i have to just put on your waterproofs and reflectives if theres low visibilty but i do try to work around the rain and havent been able to ride on the grass atm cos its either bone dry and all my pony will do is jump-he rfuses to school for longer than about 10 mins unless hes at pony club withother ponies! or its soaking wet and all you would see is jack skiing around in the paddock!!!

Yep, will ride in the rain!

Sometimes not by choice ie. when its chucking it down and im competing - we have our own type of weather at one particular event, its called "tyrella rain" - it comes at all angles, heavy rain, freezing and droplets the size of marbles!!

:p but yes, will ride in all weathers :)

Used to ride whatever the weather, but have got soft in my old age. Definitely a fair weather rider now, especially as rain usually comes with wind up our way.

LMAO. I lasted near Swansea for 9 years. I am/was a hunting addict, and did everything else too, I had to move because I couldn't stand the constant depression (I had SAD 9 months out of 12) and my knees and hips were agony. Now it is either very cold, or very hot, usually sunny and a quarter of the rainfall of Wales...love it, but I do miss Wales, just not the soggy greyness.

You cannot escape hiraeth ;) I went to Swansea uni for 5 years and rode/drove for a scurry driver based down the Gower, it was fantastic! Now I am back in the south east and it's as soggy as ever :o

This is my philosophy on the subject. When I go to a show, if it starts raining I still expect my horse to perform. But how can I expect him to perform if he's not used to riding in the rain?

Good point. I find my horse goes better in the rain - he loves the mud and the wet; after all, he hunts in it all winter :D He cannot stand the heat and gets very lazy and/twitchy in the sun, but some of the best jumping rounds I've ever done have been in the pouring rain. I have a pick of us show jumping absolutely soaked and he flew around to win it! I would post it but can't as am in work.

Rain? What's that? I am in Essex and haven't seen a decent shower in weeks. Ground's like concrete. More worried about sunstroke than getting wet! But come the wet and windy times, I'll be out there every day.

I do.

In fact I prefer hacking out in the rain because it usually means the bridlepaths are quieter and the less dog walkers there are about, the safer it is for me! :D

I agree, for the past 3 years I rode an amazing Welsh Cob stallion who was very well behaved under saddle but became understandably excited as a breeding stallion, when encountering other horses on a narrow trail, and so I much preffered riding him in conditions which others would avoid =]

Those of you who complain about wet clothing - just invest in decent waterproofing! I ride in a long coat, and have friends who ride in waterproof trousers. Decent gloves, and one is of course wearing a hat - what's the big deal??

Oh - and I have a synthetic saddle! :p

I have an arab who looks like he wants to curl up in a ball when it is raining and windy at the same time - bends himself into contortions to get out of the firing line! He tries to be good and respond to my aids but it is torture for him...

I also have 2 whippets who respond in pretty much the same way.

None of my animals are what you'd call stoical - too busy being fine skinned and beautiful - but I love them and they make me laugh a lot.

No, I can't see the point in getting my leather tack ruined, also my horse hates it, he is not in hard competition work, so, I can't see the piint

I hack out in anything except ice and snow (and then we have an indoor and outdoor arena!) I seem to be quite lucky though, apart from day 3 of the NAF Red Dragon last year I've never really ridden in more than a light rain or the odd heavy shower.

I'll ride in all weathers, mainly because you never know what you'll get whilst at a show. Monty doesn't like it but after quick tanturm he usually settles down to work.

Will admit not my favourite activity.. riding in the rain but needs must.
xx

I decided to brave it yesterday, so started schooling, 5 minutes in it started drizzling, i thought this is fine i can work through this. But within seconds the biggest dump came down, hail, wind, rain you name it!! So we literally galloped across the school, quickest dismount ever and made a run for shelter! It was only then i actually realised how far away the school was! Soaked through was an understatement!! :D

not really no

so many times it's started drizzling when I'm in the school, I don't mind that & it tends to keep us both cool

but if it's properly raining I won't go out riding, it's not my idea of fun. My horse is only 5 tho and not in hard work

I ride in the rain if its more winter rain where the ground is soft I will hack anywhere (so not hard with a slippery surface), if its these showers Im more careful as it gets slippery. Also school, do whatever it doesnt really make me change my plans..... apart from yesterday when there were hailstones and thunderstorms, then I opted to give him a day off :p
