curious really, as i always carry a stick, dressage stick for schooling and warming up at shows and a short whip for sj and xc - i always carry one as rule of thumb.
never use it but always carry one...would feel naked without it!! I once went out on hack without my breast girth and although my saddle would be ok without it, I hacked home 10 mins to put it on cos I felt completely naked without it! weird I know!!!
I so understand what people are saying about being naked without one. I always carry one unless the horse I'm riding is completely nutty and is more sensible without, it feels ever so odd not carrying one, even if I'm not using it, I know it's there just in case. I also can't jump with a schooling whip, I guess it's just habit but it feels wrong, I'll warm up with one and switch before I start jumping. Very odd!!
Never, ever drive without a whip, or even climb aboard without picking it up.
I always ride with a whip on the basis that you may only need it 1/100 times but it could be vital that one time to quickly move your horse out of the way/swat flies/smack an attacking dog between the eyes/wallop the roof of a car that gets too close (delete as appropriate). I've always believed it better to give a horse a quick flick with a whip than have to keep nagging with your legs.
Always carry a schooling whip or longer riding whip on hacks. Not to use ON her, because very, very, very rarely have had to. But it's handy for other things like keeping gorse away from legs, other animals from under her feet & other things.
I'd rather carry one & not need it than go out without one & need it & it isn't there!
Always, always, always. AND...following advice of guru William Fox-Pitt...ALWAYS have a neckstrap. And the funny thing is that neither thing ends up being used in the way originally intended but, as Chestnut mare says, for keeping away gorse/brambles etc. and smacking cars which come too close!!!..and the neckstrap for all manner of emergencies( though mainly for making the horse aware of reserve restraint devices in the event of a tanking off or broncing spree!!!
Chestnutmare...your girlie looks just like mine!
I never used to until I had to borrow one to get merlin past a very dangerous carrier bag on the floor...... he kept spinning and heading for home until I borrowed it and then he decided that he was safe and could walk past safely....... best thing was I didnt even need to use it
I carry one now just in case and also I have been worried by peoples encounters with dogs.... a couple of friends horses have actually been bitten by dogs and I thought a nice whippy stick might see the dog off....... and then there is the permit warden to get rid of!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Always carry one..............Having been attacked by a GSD, I can comfirm that several hefty smacks on the nose of a determined dog, makes not a jot of difference. It didn't back off at all!!!!

Rarely have cause to use one but follow the old adage:
Better to have a stick you don't need than to need a stick you don't have.

That reminds me! - I used to ride an enormous horse for an elderly gentleman who told me to always smack the horse three times - once for what he's done and twice for what he might do! - that always makes me smile. Dear old horse never needed to be smacked for anything!
Only when im doing flatwork and even then depends on the horse im riding! when i did work experience at an international eventers hard not once did i see anybody carry a short whip, app they must have preferred the horse to willingly do something as oppose to force it to, so i suppose thats where i picked up the habit!!!
I used to carry short one for jumping and schooling for flatwork and hacking, but now I rarely need to use it so have dropped it. If I was doing anyhting new I still carry one, but otherwise I leave them at home
