I always take a schooling whip, whatever I do. Very useful hacking for sticking out at right angles to keep cars a bit further away!

ro has a tendency to be dead to the leg and go off on his own planet so the whip reminds him im there and what we are dloing..
however in front of a packed bus the other day he napped really badly, reared and swung around...he wouldnt listen to me so i had to use the whip to get him going on forwards...then at the end of the bus he bucked...joy!!!

My horse hates whips so I only ever carry a very short whip out hacking - just in case

When riding lady i cant use one as she freaks out, and spins.
But when riding Matt, i have to use a schooling whip as he just does not want to go any faster than a donkey walk.

That's just it! Forgot to say that when I was hacking I'd hold it out to make cars pass wider than they would usually intend to
I notice too that although I never need to use it, the threat of it being there makes her step out more. I've only ever needed to tickle her with the whip so it's nice that she has a healthy respect for it. Then again, I'm light with my heels & hands as well so if I need to ask more firmly than usual she does tend to listen

Makes me laugh when people say about Chestnut mares because she goes a bright chestnut in Summer & people always seem to have that pre conceived notion about Chestnut mares. Obviously, it must be very true as she is the yard favourite!

I always carry a short crop with me! Dreamer doesn't like schooling whips at all!!
Always have one for flatwork/jumping and always on a hack as he does have a tendancy to spin and turn for home if he sees something "dangerous".....I have had to make use of it a couple of times...but not often!
I'd feel naked without it tho!

I never hack or school with one- both horses are sharp off the leg and i never need one.
I jump Red with an old racing whip that was my mums! It's about 30 years old!
I hunt with a hunting crop, just in case Red feels likes he's going to have a strop.

Always carry, seldom use. I use it more for doing the latches on gates and pushing tree branches out of the way than actually using it on my horse. Also useful for making loose dogs think twice about approaching, many will back off if you raise a stick at them.

Always. I had to fend off some panicking sheep at the weekend, they were heading for my horse's legs. The mess might not have been nice.
When my horse was young I always used a neckstrap as brakes, as he tended to ignore the bit, or perhaps didn't understand what I wanted.

I think it depends on what you do with your horse. In my case I mainly go hacking and I've had the same horse for 8 years now. I've never used a whip on her as I've never had cause to. Therefore I never carry one. I suppose it might be handy for opening gates etc but I can position Maggie quite well so have never had a problem.

Yeah even if I didn't need one, well hacking anyway, not to use on the horse but just in case someone tried to attack you (so my mum used to say) or if a dog sets about your horses legs which once happened to me.
Also I find if they can help you stay on, rather than shooting down the neck when they have one of their moments...bit like bridging your reins...can't explain it in words but I know what I'm on about
