Do you ALWAYS wear a hat?

The are so many strong opinions on this matter, just thought what yours were?

When I had my first couple of ponies I didnt always- the PC safety brigade were not around so much 15 years ago- but did for jumping etc. When I got Flint i didnt all the time- and was often frowned upon cantering up the 350 metre track without a hat, or saddle or bridle for that matter from the field to bring him in of a night... The only serious fall I had with him I was wearing a hat, the last horse I rode who broke my collar bone in 2 places I wasnt wearing a at but I did ride him last week without one. I like to think it is my preference and if something does go wrong then I have myslelf to blame. thoughts peeeps?!
 
Wait one second while i cook some popcorn, then I can sit back to watch the fireworks in peace....!

In answer to the question, yes, I always do. I am not a particularly good rider, and the risk of falling off is always there. I like my head, I want to keep it intact.
 
i always wear a hat. if i really trust the horse i'll wear a beagler for dressage, but for any hacking out or jumping, i wear a good (not been dropped!) crash cap.
yes, it's your choice, and if something goes wrong then you only have yourself to blame... and years of guilt (if you're unlucky enough to still be capable of such thoughts) and frustration, if you end up in a wheelchair or worse, with your family/loved ones having to look after you...
sorry, i know this ends up being a very emotive subject, and it should be down to personal choice i guess, but i just don't think it's a risk worth taking.
 
Nope.

What amazes me is when people, even teenagers, are seen riding their horse in bareback from the field in just a headcollar and lead rope with no hat, nothing much is said, but if that horse has tack on, then all hell breaks loose if rider is hatless!

I ALWAYS wear a hat. I've fallen off horses who have tripped and stumbled over in the field, a friend of mine's horse had a heart attack while he was riding - just because you are a super rider and have a perfect horse it doesn't mean you won't fall off and I personally don't want to risk it - it's too late once you've done the damage to go back and say - oh, I'll wear a hat in future. I don't want to wake up in hospital one day and say to my family, I know I should have worn it, I thought I'd be ok

I always wear a hat. No matter how good a rider you are and how good the horse is, they are unpredictable animals and you head is very precious!!

If I hadnt have been wearing a hat on Arch the time I was schooling him and he has a bronking fit (for no reason) I would be dead now!!!
 
Always - even if i really trust the horse. seen one to many 'random' and freak accidents not too. Though if others choose not thats their choice.
 
I agree seaslug, I have a couple of horses who have quite laid back temps, so if I can ride them bareback up the field hatless I can school them without one too. I'm quite a level headed person, I would never ride my coloured, the youngters or hack out in the road without one, but I do think I have been riding long enough to be able to make my own decisions without people on here going *gaaaaaaaaaasp* you have no hat on

Oh no! You do realise you are setting yourself up for people to be "nice" and nasty to you (in that caring sort of way LOL!) and telling you that you obviously have no brains to protect AND you don't care for your family AND you shouldn't be allowed NHS treatment if something happens AND your insurance will be null and void AND basically that you are the dumbest creature who ever walked the planet.

Pete, this arguement was used when helmets were made mandatory for motorcycle riders....'It' my choice & so will be only me to blame if I injure myself'.

Problem with this arguement is that everyone else pays for your treatment in hospital & aftercare when you are being pushed around in a wheelchair with dribble coming from your mouth. I could accept the arguement if you could actually get individual medical insurance to pay for all these hundreds or thousands of pounds of treatment instead of NHS footing the bill..... but I doubt if any company would give you a quote though

I have had several serious falls over the past 22 years that I have been riding, but think nothing of hacking on grass or dressage training without a hack. I rarely jump without a hat as i feel this is tempting fate too much. If I'm on something young or spooky then obviously I will wear a hat but I find the wretched things so uncomfortable that I do avoid them whenever I can.

PS I don't believe in interfering with evolution...and having known a few people who died not wearing hats - it's survival of the fittest!

Hi Phil, you may have seen me ride up and down and where abouts without one, an for the most time (ALOT) of the time I did wear a hat, but I do pay for my own medical insurance and also have a set up plan with my fathers...no excuse I know, I dont exicse the fact that sometimes I dont wear one, I saw a pic in PG and someone commented wear a hat, but do we only post pics of us wearing hats etc? I do no though apart from when i was 8 have a pic of me with out one

It's well known (at least on HHO) that Tia isn't subject to gravity...glides just above ground level...so doesn't need to wear a hat.
Physicists have speculated that the contents of her head are what make her float whilst the rest of us are weighed down (some more heavily than others)...but so far no conclusive results have been obtained.

Tia, I know you cant see me right now....many miles ahead of me... but as catherine tate once said " am i bovvered!" LOL BUT on the other hand I am all the above you mentioned! if ONLY i had said brain to make sense of it all and think it through!!! ha
