Always wear a hat and have never sat on a horse without one and have been riding for 11 years, I obviously dont like the idea of people riding hatless but its there own decison!
The ones I'm looking after for a week are all fine. The kids I'm looking after are a dream! The cats I'm looking after are the biggest pain in the butt!
Thankfully no need for electricity with the horses - makes life so much easier that they don't move.
Yes, I would never get on a horse without one. Riders are representatives for a sport that is already (for good reasons as well!) seen as dangerous in the eye of the general public, and we are not helping public perception by being slack with safety issues. (not to mention famous/team riders whom I actually think have an even greater responsibility as representatives of their sport)
Dressage competitions are the only grey area in my opinion...
And surely hats are pretty light and comfy nowadays...? Is it actually that much more comfortable to not wear one? I think I would feel naked!
See i remember years ago being placed on top of a horse ( no snide comments!!) without a hat to groom the horse as a child- my mom was SO "hoist him up!" yet some standards we have to day are double!
I went to rugby riding club last year with PLAYBOY to do the pairs XC and I wasnt allowed to wear my GPA to doXC but I could wear a hat (jockey skull) from 1988!!!!!!!! which is safer?? it was to do with their insurance!! I might of well of been hatless for it was made of... toilet paper- meaning if some one had sold that to me that yea i woul;d class it as sh*t

Perhaps your mum was trying to help evolution along? Don't know about the riding club rules...perhaps you should have made one out of papier mache for added kudos?

Don't feel bad. My mother's a psycho too. And the important thing is you survived (well, until the non-hat wearing thing gets you

Wait one second while i cook some popcorn, then I can sit back to watch the fireworks in peace....!
In answer to the question, yes, I always do. I am not a particularly good rider, and the risk of falling off is always there. I like my head, I want to keep it intact.

Popcorn can be dangerous. I hope you wore your safety goggles?

I have always ridden in a hat - 40 years of hat wearing! I feel very vulnerable without one. Having said that I would agree that if I see someone riding without one I just think its their lookout.

Nanny state fascist. i have been cooking popcorn all my life and if I want to cook it without safety goggles i shall. I suppose next you'll be taking me to task for cooking it with oil and salt, in a NORMAL saucepan, instead of the PC way, air-popped in a popcorn machine???
I always wear one, I too would feel very vunerable without one. I would always insist that anyone riding my horse rode one, but beyond that it's their life.

The Pony Club even specify how to cook popcorn? And I thought the Manual of Equitation crap was bad?! And soon I'll be able to use my mother's favourite line 'A nod's as good as a wink to a blind man'

I always do for jumping and 99% of the time for hacking, rarely do for schooling - but I am trying to get myself into the habit of wearing one in the school!
