Do you ALWAYS wear a hat?

Always - after taking a flyer off a horse I was trying - I realised I didn't fancy hitting my head with that kind of force, so I always do, it would feel odd NOT to for me.

I don't care if other people don't - its a personal choice at the mo (ie its not law to) so they can do what they like!

I always wear a hat for hacking, schooling, jumping etc. But i don't often wear one when i'm on the little ponio in the field. He's v. laid back, (i know that stuff can still hapen though) and i often vault on him and canter across the field with just the headcollar. I feel very safe on him as i've cantered across the field with just the headcollar for years (obviously with hat when i was younger) but over time it was easier not to get the hat- i know...irresponsible. I used to be able to get on and off him in canter so i can't see why it would deeply affect me if anything did happen.

ooohhhh.....not this old chestnut again.
ALWAYS for any ridden work - It does really annoy me when I open pages of a magazine (like H&H last week) and find a dressage rider (or other rider) parading around hatless.

With regards to groundwork, lunging etc, I don't alway wear one.

Always always wear one but am not one to moan at others who choose not to.

With so many risks in life (I mean just getting on a horsey is taking more risk than many people will take) it's up to the individual to asses the situation and do what they think is best.

Am another who has her hat to thank for saving her brain in a couple of occasions.

not in bed....

What amazes me is when people, even teenagers, are seen riding their horse in bareback from the field in just a headcollar and lead rope with no hat, nothing much is said, but if that horse has tack on, then all hell breaks loose if rider is hatless!

Haha, thats me. I think nothing of galloping bareback across the field, with just a headcollar and no hat. And yet with tack I wouldn't get on without a hat

. And I have fallen off bareback and hit my head before, very odd logic I have.

I'm quite attached to my brain so yes I wear a hat when riding.

It's an individual's choice but I would rather wear one and not regret it for the rest of my life if something happened but hey, In my last post I was a Risk manager so it's ingrained in me to mitage risks LOL.
I ride bareback to the field etc and April is a very safe hack and well behaved in the school but I always wear my hat!
Like Mickey I sometimes forget when doing groundwork but I do try to remember.

My own personal opinion is that people sometimes don't wear a hat when schooling because they think it makes them look more 'professional'. I am not meaning anyone in particular here so don't be offended it's just an opinion.
I feel the exact same about wearing reflectives when riding on the road (another lengthy debate to be started there!).

Mostly yes, only time it has been known that i dont is if i am in the school and it is real hot!!!Would never get on an unknown without it!Personal choice if you ask me!

I always wear a hat. Would feel odd without one, like getting in the car and not putting a seat belt on! Out of interest, do you people who dont wear hats use seatbelts?

Yes, I think it is down to choice. However, even if I chose not to, I would hate to get badly injured because of it and then put my family and friends through that! IMO that's a bit selfish!

Sorry, could you explain? I dont understand why being able to vault on and off means your head won't get squished in an accident...?

I always wear a hat, I'm not good enough not too

BUT when I was a kid (about 25 years ago!) I used to get off the school bus on a Friday, walk down the lane and put my ponies head collar on, make some reins out of the lead rope, jump on his back and take him home for the weekend. No hat, no saddle, no reins, no nothing!!! It was a 20 minute ride home, a short part of it along a main road and NO ONE used to bat an eyelid. If there was too much traffic, I rode on the pavement. Can you imagine doing that now!!!

Times have changed, unfortunatley and wearing safety wear is all part of it.

Yes, I always wear a hat. I need a functioning brain. I do appreciate that it's up to individuals to decide. I don't agree with them and often I don't understand their reasoning but it's their choice.

No I don't wear a seatbelt when I am on my farm. I do on public roads as it is the Law.

always wear my hat, didnt want to take it of earlier either because my head was bloody cold lol
its a long way down and dont fancy landing on my head from that height lol lol
smile.gif

I would never dream of getting on my horse without one!! I want to keep my brain intact, after all, you only get one don't you?
grin.gif
No matter what I am doing, schooling, hacking etc, i wear one!!
smile.gif

Yes, I always do wear a hat but there has been a couple of occasions when I felt ill when schooling so took my hat off. I would hate to be like poor Christopher Reeve and never be able to ride again, and to have someone else wipe my bottom
blush.gif
However, I dont judge those who choose not to, as long as its not on my land
grin.gif

As i have said before, i wear one on strange horses, most youngsters and if i think whatever i'm going to be sitting on is likely to be sharp (ie in windy weather)

but no i dont wear one all the time - often dont when schooling - and not in summer cos its to hot and in winter i tend to get on wearing a wooly/fleecy hat and forget to change it for my skull cap - if the horse is one i know i stick with the warm wooley one!

all depends on wher i am, what im riding and the external influances i think might affect said horsey

ps - C Reeve suffored spinal damage and was wearing a hat at the time of his accident.
