Do you always

If it is required by the course people then yes! Most of the time is it a requirement and mine is ok on the comfort front so it doesn't bother me.

I do on the basis that I will have to wear one when competing & therefore I will get the same feel. Also my OH probably wouldn't let me school without it.

Yes. Solid fences hurt!!

Now this was the conversation with mum. I do but out hunting I don't and we jump (not present hunt) logs/hedges/rails/ditches and hunt jumps e.t.c with no body protecter....yet we always tend to wear one xc schooling...odd!

yes, especially because my body protector's very comfy. and i'd feel a right wally if i got badly injured and my expensive body protector was busy protecting the hanger at the time...

What body protecter do you have? I don't really think my RP is that comfy..always feel so restricted!

but in past i have landed wierdly and been hurt by correctly fitted and besoked BP,
blush.gif
, i know they will help on some types of falls but on other they bloody hurt aswell
I also hunt without one and i jump hedges, rails open ditches etc... but that me and it's me that get's hurt.......... but i personnel don't mind what other folk do

Yes yes YES! You do not wana break your back on one of those fences - plus I think you'll find all XC courses require you to wear a body protector.
I have a racesafe and its THE most comfortable thing ever - I wear it on all the young/naughty horses and can actually move in it (with my RP I was in one position and one position only, i could hardly breath!).

i have a RP one, and it fits me like a glove... once it's on, i forget it's there (until the end of the xc when i feel as if i'm going to explode with heat, and can't wait to strip it off!)
i fiddled around for ages with the velcro waist strip until it was just right though.

Ah so it obviously works for some people. I found it didnt fit properly around my chest - where as because the racesafe is flexible it moulds to my body and I don't even realise i'm wearing it! Love it!

And I would never think of wearing one out on a fun ride, and we are galloping and jumping for 2 hours, over some impressive timber

Oh interesting! I would never wear one hunting, and probably wouldn't bother for a fun ride, but would not dream of going XC schooling or HT without one!

I have an airowear Reiver in kids XL and it is brill, fits perfectly and so comfy.

I would also go hunting AND fun ride in one - especially on an unpredictable horse. I nearly broke my back in april (and i'm still having major problems with my back and will do forever) and it would have been prevented if I had worn a BP. It was following that fall I got my racesafe. It's just far too easy to injure yourself and it took something like that to make me realise!

Yes I always do when jumping even in the school. The only significant period I have had off work in 3 years have been for back problems.

It still annoys me that show jumping encourages you to wear a smart jacket, which is zero protection in a fall, rather than a BP. I have had several rows with collecting ring stewards over me wearing a shirt and BP rather than a jacket. 1 said I had to have a jacket or I could not compete, so my mate got me my navy and lilac goretex. The rules didn't say what sort of jacket...

I'm far too vain to wear one out hunting, took Ernie, first time hunting(his first time, despite being a pointer) in a beagler...I still believe I bounce (and yes have previously broken my back on a 4y.o and chucked off of a 3y.o on concrete and landed on my head) but I wouldn't wear a BP out hunting, yet would xc schooling!

I'm not convinced about beagler's - at the end of the day, I don't think a BP would save you life - where as a skull cap would!

On my first day hunting when i was wee, A lady's horse bolted past us on a lane, it fell down when it got to the road - she was killed.
frown.gif
she died from head injuries - her hat came off (a beagler) so everyone wore skull caps after that!

I wear my body protector BSJA showjumping, jumping whilst eventing, hunting and xc schooling. I don't care how 'stupid' I look, if I fall off I want to walk away from it in one piece. More fool the muppets that don't and end up injured.

Plus I wear a Gatehouse HS1 when I jump, yes they are very fashionable but they are also one of the safest hats on the market. I figure there is no point skimping on safety for the sake of being fashionable.

To be fair if it came off I doubt whether it was made to measure, probably just a cheapy.

I've fallen off in the school a few times wearing mine and its never fallen off.

ETS: And once out hunting and it didn't budge!

But if they have the same protection as a skull cap then why wouldn't they be allowed in eventing/racing etc? She was quite wealthy I believe - not the type to have a cheapy!

I don't really get why people want to were them anyway? i think they look really old fashioned!

Ahhh but don't think it will always save you, I was wearing one when broke my back. Yet I was dumped on a road by a loony bin racehorse wearing just a hard hat and didn't even have a bruise on me....its the luck of the draw I'm afraid!

They don't give the same protection. If it was made to measure it wouldn't have fallen off!!

They look a darn sight smarter than those mushrooms others wear! I wouldn't change mine

I know, luck plays a big part in how you come out of a fall. I guess my point is aimed at injuries that could've been avoided if the person had been wearing the right kit.
