Do you bandage legs at night?

So.. If one on box rest wasn't bad enough I now have two!

As the little man is going to be in for a few weeks due to having a row with a wire fence yesterday (the fence won) and he is 26 I think its sensible to bandage his legs at night to avoid stiffness and make him more comfortable

I was going to opt for some quilted stable wraps/boots but my partner thinks the best for old ponies is some gamgee and fleece bandages of equal pressure

Ive never really "needed" to bandage at night before - thoughts or experiences please?
 
I'd probably see how he did without first, then if needed I'd use fybagee & fleece bandages. I find wraps are fine for warmth but they don't offer support like bandages. But, sometimes just the extra warmth is all that's needed.
 
see how he is without first. if his legs start to fill or he becomes stiff bandage or use stable wraps to keep his legs warmer. bandages provide more support so if thats what he needs then thats what i would go with :)

i personally have never used stable bandaged even when my horse was on 8 months box rest but then again he was only 7 at the time. hope hes feeling better soon
 
I bandage my older horses front legs (he's had an injury) and he has stable wraps behind. He has always a little stiff behind in the mornings even when he was younger but since using the wraps there has been a real difference, no stiffness and no slight filling of the legs like there used to be.
 
I use silver interactive leg wraps on my old horse whos 29 this year if she's got to stand in for any reason, her hind legs are really puffy without them, but great with them, and magnet wraps up front, shes definitely less stiff after wearing them
 
Thanks guys - hes a little stiff behind any way and on Cortaflex for his hocks so maybe bandage those and pop wraps on up front

My 6 YO mare is lovely and loose so she can remain on box rest and bandage free!
 
We often have box rests in that need bandages to prevent filling, and my OH's horse always has his legs bandaged when he's in the stable as his legs fill like billio!

I would never stable bandage without a pad underneath. They're on for too long to risk damage to tendons.

I will travel and school with fleece bandages on (non-elasticated) with no padding, but if travelling they will have pads underneath if travelling for more than a couple of hours.

Their legs are precious, too precious to risk for the sake of two extra minutes putting a pad on.
 
I would, but same as others, I use gamgee and fleece bandages. I occasionally put them on my mare when shes a bit puffy, and helps her alot, shes fine the next day after having them on the previous night.

I have one on box rest and another who is in medium work, but mostly in 24/7 (refuses to go out in the mud :p) and both wear Premier Equine Stables Wraps. Love them as they are quick to put on/take off and are warm and supportive (as much as you can support a leg anyway ;) ).
 
I wouldn't bandage until you've seen if he needs it tbh. Badly applied bandages can cause more damage than they're worth.
 
Uneven tensioning on opposite legs, creasing causing pressure points, too tight... All can cause damage to tendons which quickly adds up. I really dislike bandaging unless absolutely necessary though, and am very paranoid about it (having seen the superficial damage they can do, and the resulting panic of tendon damage).

The pad helps distribute the pressure of the bandage, but is still not great. If they get filled legs, and then walk them off the next morning fairly quickly I'd be inclined to leave them be tbh. I mean, the bandage is only preventing the swelling, which is nature's way of coping...
 
I don't really know- worth doing a search on here, especially in Comp. Riders where there has been a lot of discussion in the past.
