Do you bath (the horse) before you clip?

It depends when you bath. If the coat is damp at all the clippers with not cut properly,IME, even a bit of sweat will cause clogging. I clip dry, just give them a good groom, and them a hot cloth bath to get the grease out when done.

No I don't bath before clipping, just give a good groom. However, i have to bath one of my horsers after as he has a reaction to clipper oil. I chipped him today as it was quite warm and sunny.

Yes but clip early as horse gets hairy so I've never got a thick coat to wash & dry. Probably won't November clips onwards but if its a sunny day I can get him dry quickly (and have warm water)

I didn't but gave a thorough groom.
Mare is lightly rugged and the clipper said as she was clipping that she's the cleanest grey she's seen. (A novelty as usually she's the muddiest).

yes because usually they are filthy. I have loaned my big horse out for the season and went over to clip him for her last month, a full hunter clip. She had washed him but he will still quite wet so I had to dry him with a hairdryer! Believe me it worked, he is 17hh warmblood, it took ages at least an hour! but he didn't mind at all thank goodness.

We just did good groom and lots of mane and tail conditioner on the body. Friend brought her cow clippers which were amazing and flew thru the thick and sometimes dried on muddy hair.

We bath the day before and keep in overnight. Years ago I let someone borrow my clippers and she burnt the motor out on her cob's greasy backside - aside from the risk to my clippers I think it gives a much nicer result if they're clean!

I went hunter trialling last weekend and when I washed him off I bathed him at the same time. Clipped Wed evening - worked a treat!

Used warm water - happy pony, clean coat 🙌

Yes. I didn’t this time around and it was noticeable, the clippers normally sailed through his coat but with the grease and sweat it took longer than normal.

So I definitely won’t be clipping him without a bath again.

I always try to bath first.
If I know clipping is approaching I’ll take the opportunity of a good day or horse being particularly sweaty to chuck some shampoo at him!
I do have hot water. Id feel a bit mean otherwise!
So maybe not directly before but always the week before at some point

It depends my horses are clipped all year round and bathed so they never are really dirty .
If I was clipping a fully coated horse for the first time in winter I would bath the day before .

Always for the first clip of the year as my welshies' winter coats are incredibly thick. After that I just give them a really good groom before the clips for the rest of the winter.
