On the back of the current post on Soapbox I am interested to know whether everyone who uses this forum buys/reads the magazine?

I went from being a subscriber, to buying the mag regularly, to occasionally... now I only buy it if there's something specific I want to read. Even then I only usually read the letters and whatever article I bought it for; used to read it cover to cover. I just don't enjoy it anymore.

What about everyone else?

Used to always have it, then didn't get a subscription as I was trying to cut down on £. Then still got it quite alot, now only once or twice every couple of months. I don't find it as interesting or informative as it used to, and it is really expensive!

Buy it - did used to subscribe but got fed up of them jacking up the prices at the end of the subscription period! principles and all that so just buy when I see it.

Used to buy it religiously but now I only buy it after a big event ie Badminton, or when there looks to be more than one or two measly hunt reports.

It's just far too expensive for what you get.

Subscriber. I only started riding again recently and had ditched all my old kit - I subscribed to get a free jacket.

I do read/flick through it though.

when I lived in GB (20 years ago) I couldn't do without it. Now, I wouldnt want it as a present. HH is nothing like the intelligent and informitive mag that it was. It is now absolutely without sense seeing as we have the lower end of the equestrian scene...'Your Horse' and co. So sad but it seems that anything with a bit of character and intelligence to boot, isn't welcome in this day and age.I hate to think where we are going to end up.

Absolutely agree with you.

Get it via a "round Robin"- ie friend spends her hard earned cash,:D passes onto me when finished and I then pass it onto another friend, who forwards to someone in her circle of friends!
So, one buys it and at least 4 familes read it! Bargain!!:D

As I have said in the other post, subcriber for years but cancelled it last year, Its awful now and I struggle to find much to read in it. I use to love it so so so much.

How sad. seems like it has become one of the 'living dead'. Should we hold a 'pre-wake' or should we be tag it as 'DNR'--'do not resuscitate'? What a sad day.

I used to subscribe and got fed up with it being on the shop shelves before it came through the post. I then started buying it occasionally but only for the SJing snippets and when i found I could read the bits of interest in 10 mins stopped buying it.

Its expensive for the reading it offers imo.

Only buy occasionally now. Used to subscribe many (30 ish) years ago. So many pages then, so much info but of course then we didn't have the net so if you wanted to know any show dates etc you had to buy it.

i shall be cancelling my subscription this week- the price goes up and up and the magazine gets thinner and thinner!

No, do you know how much International subscriptions are?

Even with a fairly hefty discount:

Credit card 1 year: $300.70 - 31% discount = $207.48

That is 16 sacks of feed/66 small bales of hay/ trimming for 5 horses/1 months income from a pasture boarder etc, etc, etc.

I subscribe, have done for years.

I get annoyed with the competition reports being a bit 'nothingy' with the same favourites of the writers being mentioned every time. im sure one sj reporter just recycles the same old reports with a little tweak- they read the same every time you just know what comes next!

I have to say it doesnt take as long to read as it used to and is definately not the quality it was. I bought horse magazine for a change recently- BIG mistake. most of it was recycled frm the horse and hound!

I think i'm right in saying its by the same publisher which is why its s o similar, you'd be better off with Your Horse or something, Horse Deals I get thats ok.

No I never buy it. It's got thinner and thinner over the years, and seldom has any articles I'm interested in.
(The forum us livelier!).

I used to buy it about 3 or sometimes 4 times a month but I now only buy it if I see something interesting or worthwhile.
1. I think it isn't and good as it used to be.
2. I'm trying to save money!

I used to subscibe then also got hacked off with the prices going up so much year on year. Then I bought at least twice a month but I know find cosmopolitian more informative when it comes to horse...that's how good it is.

I subscribe and pass it on to a friend who buys 3 monthly horse magazines and gives them to me, we then pass them allon to someone else

I stopped buying it about 18 months ago as the price appeared to go up too regularly for me. Its also got thinner and around xmas New Year time its an absolute travesty of justice for the publishers to ask anyone to pay money for a magazine full of nothing. Its awful. Not much of interest to read these days unfortunately.

i quite agree, half of it is adverts, as for the "hound" bit- sadly lacking for many months of the year.surely out of the hunting season they can find something to print about hounds, breeding, archives etc??they dont even have the number of jobs in it anymore-
