Retired mare comes to call since retired (trying to tell me something!) but wanders in sedately (she's 27), 5yr old need to catch and comes in slowly!
Yard I was at before I would have caught even if she had come to call then due to fact that there were a lot of liveries in the same field who would have all charged up the field (not much grass) and don't think it is fair to get ALL horses in the gateway then take mine out and leave the rest scrapping in the gateway. 1 livery did do this and it used to really annoy me - selfish witch!
Mine are at home and stables are in paddock, so as rain/hail/snow can often be very hard and horizantal in winter up here in Moorlands I find it really helpful that ponies soon learnt to come when called, whatever time it is, (blacksmith usually comes mornings) and I feed each afternoon and handle them before turning back out.
They are either waiting for me in the paddock by gate to stable paddock or come at canter when I call.
I find that having a routine of feeding at the same time each day has really helped settle the two youngsters and gives them confidence to know what happens.
My mare I can call in most days providing she can hear me, but I do have to walk up a bank into the field itself, as she's also in 20 acres. The young un hasnt quite got the hang of it yet so I have to find him in said field and lead him in!
I was so worried when I rented a field I think was 12 acres....I shouldn't have been...all the years of them knowing I mean food.. I just called my geldngs name and all 3 came cantering up to be in !
There's the odd occasion where the spring grass is coming through and I get a disgruntled look, followed by head back down , but 9/10 he comes to call.
It makes my day to hear a girly neigh, followed by a stampede of cobby hooves
Sadly I don't have as much as twenty acres, but I do call in rather than catch. My partners cob comes in when I call but my partner goes to catch and often fails!
Only a tiny paddock and it wouldn't take a minute to go and catch, but I whistle her and she comes. In fact there isn't a horse on the yard that i can think of that needs to be caught tbh.
He's kept at a large livery yard. If I called him I'd have the whole lot of them come running - it's not fun having all 15 odd boys (18hh heavies to 12hh natives) wanting in at the same time. X
