Depends on the time of year. If its winter they are waiting for me to arrive and as soon as Im seen the older mare starts yelling for her dinner In the summer when the grass is growing I have to go and fetch as they all become suspiciously deaf
Mine wander up to the fence when they see the car but each also know their name if they are doing something naughty they will look up when you call their name and come away from what they are doing if I am lucky. can get each one to the right feed by using their names too
Usually they hear the car and by the time I've parked and got through the first gate they're either at the field gate or on their way, if I manage to sneak up on them I just called 'c'mon' and they come over. They usually only walk or trot over with an occasional canter but I have my own yard so there's no worries about other horses charging over.
Mine all know their names and will come to call if hungry or if I have just arrived. If I've been there a while and/or they have full tummies they'll more than likely just raise their heads and look at me.
They will come running en masse, which I love to see, but if I'm pulling one in to ride, I will generally quietly go to collect them rather than calling them all over and having them milling around the gate whilst I'm trying to get one out!! They still usually follow, anyway, on the off-chance I might have some food on me, but it is more controlled and a bit more "single file" rather than an unruly mob technique!!!!
I used to call but she never came to me, she would walk quickly in the opposite direction So now I go to get her and she pretends she hasn't seen me until I nudge her nose with my foot to get her head up, nothing else works!
Mine all come to the call then I leave the gate open and they all walk into the correct stables. I always put their feeds in ready otherwise they would all walk straight back out.
Mine are both muzzled so are begging to come in. Their fields are so exposed, though, they were happy to come in on bad weather nights in the winter, too. Not so hardy natives...
My two wander over when they see me but if there's a lot of grass I have to go catch!
My old pony would never walk over! She'd look as if to say 'if you want me in, you can come and get me....'!
I would never stand and shake a bucket. I think its quite lazy and also potentially very dangerous.... have seen so many arguments by gates caused by food, just isn't worth it for the sake of a little walk!
I actually love how both of mine whinny to acknowledge my arrival 9 times out of ten. They either see my climbing over the gate and call, or sometimes they manage to hear me and my OH chatting up the footpath about half a mile away in the dark!
My lad has a field stable so he sees me coming down the road and heads straight over to it. He is usually stood in his stable waiting for his tea by the time I get to him!!!
By the time I get to the gate with the tack or the buckets, the horse is there waiting
He will then stand to be either fed and feet cleaned, or to be groomed and tacked up, no need for halters: once he's with you, he's with you.
He does come to a whistle in the unlikely event that he's not standing waiting. He also has several whinnies ("hello" is one, "is that my dinner" is a different one, and "I'm in trouble here" is the one I never like hearing). What I especially like is that he seems to understand rules of conversation. About a week ago, I drove up and parked by the fence, but got a phone call. I answered the phone as horse came and stood at fence and looked in at me. But he didn't whinny until I'd actually got out of the car
How many have you got and how big is your paddock?
If I have to bring 10 in out of a paddock that is half a mile from the barn I sure as hell am not walking that distance 5 times! I couldn't give a stuff about saving the ground, it is never even top of the hoof deep around the gates at worst, a harrow and a roller fix most of the damage.
We had one other horse who spent about 6 weeks in uncatchable...too much of a good thing out in green land. Impossible but usually was good as gold. Was not going to be caught and didnt get caught. Gave up and just abandoned for that time.
Mine all normally come walking over when they see me, I don't call to them as usually they've seen or heard me walking down the path towards them so start heading over. If they're not up to the gate by the time I get there I will go and meet them half way, all is done at leisurely pace by everyone involved, we all know we've got a bit of a trek back to the stables so whats the point in rushing!
Depends on the weather, the amount of grass in the field and whether I have something yummy in my hand . If it's pouring rain/snowing/hailing/blowing a hooly then Kal will come to the gate. If I am holding some goose grass, he'll come running. If the weather is fine and there is loads of grass then I have to go catch him.
