I never used to but I do now, A while ago I was hacking through the woods having a nice canter and i saw a pile of logs, ooh jump so cantered up to it, it wasnt till we were in the air i realised it was not a jump it was a bike ramp!! it was quite long and id jumped it backwards luckily we cleared it!!

I always try and check the other side, ive been caught out by breakwaters that are 1ft take off side and about 4ft drop!

I never jump out on a hack. Ellie is of the mindset that if it doesnt have flags, wings, bright colours or flowers around it, it aint there to be jumped! She absolutely refuses to budge, even if it's just a small simple log

But.....if I did jump out hacking, I would always check first

I would check if I had the chance but it's not always possible, I've come round corners at a fast canter on unknown tracks only to find a log in my way and usually find jumping it is safer than attempting to stop in time! Unfortunately my girl always has to be at the front so everyone behind me gets the chance to stop or see if I make it over alive

The worst that has happened to me is jumping into seriously deep mud, my horse buckled on landing and I rolled of the side, she then got up making as much fuss as possible and covered me in mud! I got back on and went about 5 minutes up the track to find another area just like it where I couldn't tell how muddy it was, I was quite proud of my girl as she just ploughed in either forgettting that she had just fallen or not really caring

I always check - the teenagers round our way have habits of leaving beer tins / other rubbish near logs they have been hanging out around.
Although local farmers seemed to have come up with a new method to deter them .... dumping manure near said logs, LOL

Hehe Ellie has the same views as Ronnie. Unless it is brightly coloured or has numbers, it's not a jump and therefore must be snorted at from some distance. This includes small logs.

I learnt about checking the landing side with my previous mare. I did the same hacking route as usual which had a log halfway down a narrow strip of field. On this particular day there was a sheep sleeping under the far side but I didn't know that until we took off. What didn't help was that Cass was terrified of sheep at the best of times. Cue her doing a massive jump nearly making me fall off, then her bolting across the field towards a high pedestrian gate and despite me hauling on her mouth to get her onto a circle she totally ignored me and decided to jump it (it was a good 4 foot high if not higher) from gallop. Nearly ended in disaster as she smacked it and pivoted and we landed in a heap on the far side.

Now I wouldn't EVER jump something out hacking without checking the landing side, even if it was a regular hacking route/jump.
