Do you close the back shutters on your trailer during the winter?

I have an ifor williams 511 and was wonderng whether many others close over their shutters in this chilly weather?
i leave the shutters open whilst the trailer isnt in use, i find it goes moldy and attracts condensation when they are closed.

Do you mean in transit with a horse, or when its standing parked?

I always leave the doors (rear) open when travelling - would rather put rugs on horse and keep the air flow when in transit. When arrived, if its raining in, I would shut one (two if absolutely nec) to keep horse from getting rained on.

At home - all doors shut at all times - don't like the idea of rain getting (and sitting) on the floor for long periods.

Mine is a 510, which doesn't have the mould problem. I've heard about it in the newer ones. Have you got onto Ifor about it?

yes ifor arent interested about the mould!!

i closed the shutters whilst in transit and opened the one on the roof. it is freeeeezing tonight. Pony club dengie qualifiers UNFORTUNATELY!!

I keep them shut all the time, travelling horses or not.

I frequently travel youngstock loose and no way am I risking them hopping out the back.

My double trailer has a good roof vent and decent windows on both sides for ventilation.

The new Ifor 511 has a new air system in it so the back doors can be shut I have a camera in my car and he teavels much better with them shut when they were open he was always looking round and big lorrys didn't care and used to come up realy close he's moe content with them shut as for the mould I wipe mine every time I see a bit of mould its pain but I'd rather have a clean trailer.

I would always keep the back top doors shut - most trailers have ventillation holes. I suppose if you had the time and energy you could keep them open on dry frosty days like at the moment and batton up the hatches when the wet stuff comes down.

Ours is an old Rice, we've never had them shut when travelling a horse but we do leave them on otherwise to keep the weather out.

Correct me if I'm wrong.. but I thought that if travelling at night you had to have an internal light on - is this so other road users can see you have an animal on board?? But if the shutters are closed you wouldn't see this? Or another reason?

I sometimes think my horse would travel better with one or both closed as he is forever turning his head around to see what is coming up behind him but have never tried it for the above reason.

I close mine purely because somehow my horse gets his tail over the top of it! i have all the vents open, so the air is still flowing through.
But i think person to person it changes, people just do what they prefer, more air possibly wet or cold horses, or less air but dry slightly warmer horses.
If it wasn't for the tail problem i'de have mine open :)

Sorry to hijack thread.. but I'm confused now, should light in trailer be on or off when travelling at night? On this website it states 'When transporting horses at night, the horse trailer must be fitted with a functional internal light' but does that mean it should be on lol?
