I was bought a magazine subscription (horsey) for my birthday! It has a lot of articles that go into some detail on various schooling issues. Some are flatwork some jumping.

Apart from the dressage ones having models that are medium or advanced horses with riders who are currently riding to these standards (yeah right that's going to inspire me and my cob!) I can't see how I am supposed to use the article? Yes I suppose we should all be aspiring to be the next Grand Prix rider but not all of us have horses of that calibre.

OK so I read it at home and re read it, but other than try and hold the magazine while riding how am I supposed to remember all the steps that they go through? For jumping there are some good ideas re grids etc but I am not into jumping.

Everyone at my yard is usually too busy to help out and I can't see someone standing in the cold shouting out the instructions to me! It's interesting reading but don't suppose it would replace me having a 'live' instructor standing there yelling at me!! Does anyone find these articles useful, am I doing something wrong by not remembering all the things I am supposed to do once I am on board??!!! Does all this even make any sense??

One of those mysteries in life. I always wondered who exactly did those exercises. Perhaps there's a niche in the market for saddle-based magazine stands!!!

agreed, interesting to read but mostly I would just pick out something that 'clicked' with a problem I'd been having... "oooh, leg yielding off a circle to encourage correct canter strike off" kind of ideas.

I think they set them out as 'schooling programmes' in order to make sense of them but mostly they are just a list of ideas to help with various problems horse owners might have.

Well.....I try and do them

Don't laugh but I photocopy articles that are of use to Frankie and me and put them in a folder and keep it at the yard! Sometimes if i have time I have a quick read but I do forget what the hell I'm supposed to be doing sometimes.

Perhaps you could show them to you instructor if you have one? That's what I might do

I used to do them, and on my fat hairy cob!!! I subscribe to Horse and Rider and they have great schooling ideas. Obviously some are too advanced but they have a rossette scheme to show which are harder and which are easier.

I also have to school alone most of the time which is why I have lessons as and when I can afford it to make sure what I'm feeling is correct.

I do some of them - some I find too complicated to remember tbh

If I really like the look of one I give it to my trainer and we give it a go

I think Horse and Rider have started to do some small tear-out cards that you can put in your pocket and use whilst you're riding. Never tried it myself though, but might be helpful...
