Do you ever give them "rest days"?

If you take your dogs on extra long walks one day, or throw the ball for them much longer than is usual, do you cut back the following day?

The day before last, Stella played an hour of fetch in the morning, and hour in the evening. She sprints like a bunny and doesn't miss a beat the entire time, so it was almost like she ran the equivalent of a half-marathon! The next day, she didn't seem sleepier than usual, but I decided to take her for shorter walks, which she seemed fine with.

So, do other people take this approach, even if the dog seems its usual perky self?

Funny you should post this today as I was only thinking about it earlier...I took mine out on a 2 hour hike through the woods yesterday while it was cooler and today the dogs were up for a longer walk but it was poor mummy who was knackered!

Isn't that always the way?

Those breed guides always say that Boston Terriers need 30 minutes of exercise a day, but that seems pretty insufficient to me

On the other end of the scale, I wonder if I overdo it sometimes (two hours of outside playing/walks and then my husband plays a lot of tug of war with her).

All of which leaves me a bit paranoid about "breaking her" (

) and so I end up cutting back every couple of days.

I guess it depends on the exercise....one 30 minute walk on a lead compared to one 30 minute mad dash round the park at 90 miles an hour!

I dont know......get this

Too funny. Well, there are certainly plenty of gay men in NYC, although most seem to prefer Yorkies to anything too butch, like a Boston.

Anyway, here I am -- definitely a girl, ya see (with stupid horse braces on my top teeth at the minute

To be honest this is something that has never ever crossed my mind. I don't make my dogs do anything; they either do it or they don't. I still wander about my farm and do the things I have to do; if the dogs want to come then they can, and generally do, but if not, I don't care.

Mind you, I don't walk my dogs or do any of the things that people who live in towns have to do. They poo when they want to poo, the run when they want to run....it's all so natural an existence for them that this is probably why I've never thought about it.

M boy (JR) does what he wants, but normally follows me out on rides (unless it is raining/cold), then he hangs round the tack room. He will always come if allowed when I take the horse out in the lorry for a longer ride, but still normally wants to go round the fields later (though he tends to be sleepier when he gets home)

If dog is her perky self, she'll get a normal walk twice around the park - if she is tired she will sit down by the gate, bless her. She doesn't even have to walk alot to be exhausted - on a sponsored ride, she was there for the whole day but greeting so many people must've knackered her - she slept for the entire day after LOL!

Boris don't do Day offs!!! poor me!!! he's hyper if not walked! He had lovely swim this am but in about 2 hours he would be bouncing off the front door!!

At 9 months he does go to alot of different places for walks, alot of times with other dogs, play fetch, swimming, sniffing every blade of grass... he can't get enough!!!!

See, that's what I was wondering...my dog can be sick, yet one squeak of her ball and she is up and at 'em. A few months back, she pulled a muscle in her neck -- which I didn't know about -- and she still carried on chasing her ball!

That bulldog tenaciousness does them no favours sometimes.
