Do you ever have days when you just can't ride?

Schooled Patrick last night and it was awful, I felt like I couldn't ride, he felt like he couldn't bend at all and I just wanted to get off and give up. I eventually managed to get some decent work before I stopped but I just want reassurance that I'm not the only one.

I do think that some days I just shouldn't ride.

Definitely... When I came back from my hols I felt as though I had completely forgotten how to ride!!!

Perhaps last night you were feeling tired and not riding your best which then made you feel the way you did?

I really don't know Becki, I do wonder if Patrick was having an off day too. I'm giving him today off so it will be interesting to see how we get on on Friday. Glad I'm not the only one though, if you know what I mean.

yes!! thats why i am starting keep fit training tonight lol!! as i know my riding needs to become stronger through my upper body as i feel so cr*p right now-although i seemed fine on my last horse!

We all have really off days... A few weeks ago I got on Hannah and just couldn't do sitting trot

I can always sit to Hannah's trot without any issues whatsoever, but that day for some reason, I had to do rising for the entire schooling session

So glad I am not alone. However from looking at everyones signatures, it seems you can all ride beautifully so I don't know what you are all worried about

Yes definitely, and when I have a bad ride it's as though the world is ending! I get so mad at myself! But I know that everyone has them and when I next sit on and have a great ride it's all forgotten, don't worry Jo you're def not alone! x

LOL pinkwellies! Surely that's not true!

I have days where I am schooling and nearly in tears, and the horse is either feeling jaded, or ignoring me, or I'm just off colour and don't know it - now why oh why, on days like that don't I ever decide I have to hack around the village instead because that would absolutely be the best thing to do, I just get all cross and depressed instead

you only realise it later - we all know we should hack on those days and relax, but no! We just try to carry on regardless!

Ha ha ha!! LOL!

Every flippin' time I get on!

You're certainly not alone. Just keep smiling, that's what I do at the minute! Far better to laugh than cry.

yes i get days where i feel like i can't ride - sometimes i end up in tears! my riding is so important to me and when i get off days i feel awful, feel like giving up, and feel like i should take up hiking instead. i can be very hard on myself so the bad days are always worse for me - i don't think 'oh its one of those days' its always 'i am the worst rider, i cant believe i am so bad.....' you get the picture!! also it winds me up which in turn winds Frankie up and then nothing good comes of it, and i cry in his stable

has anyone else here cried when riding for that reason? they think they are bad?!

* or just me?? *

No its definately true, was when I was still riding my mare who could be a tad awkward if she didn't feel like going forward.
Of course now with Beanie the wonder horse you only have to think canter and he does, that horse makes me look good. Although somedays it feels like I never ridden before and I have trouble co-ordinating different parts of my body! Find it usually when there is someone who I respect/admire as a rider, in the arena with me

Since breaking my back, I am very picky about when I ride. If I am especially tired I will not ride. My back injury aside, when schooling I think there is not much point if you are unable to keep your mind on asking and rewarding and not rewarding as the case may be. Otherwise you could be inadvertently teaching your horse in a different way on different days. (Eg some days you may repeat transitions that aren't very good and some days if you are tired you may not bother?)

Quite often - sometimes I feel like a complete novice and it's so frustrating. I just end on a good note even if it's in walk and put it down to one of those things

Many a time! Sometimes I really wonder whether I shouldn't maybe change to breeding hamsters or something equally unabsorbing. But then I have a ride like I did today and I want to sleep in the saddle so when I wake up I am still there doing whatever it was that worked

Well gave him the day off yesterday to keep us both sane so I will be trying again tonight, fingers crossed it goes better tonight than Wed evening
