Does anyone do this? I would never ever leave my horse unattended tied to my trailer. However today at a competition I couldn't believe how many owners did just this. The people parked next to me unloaded their horse and declared they were going to get some lunch. Off they went, the horse had the longest lead rope ever. About an hour later, I looked round to see that the horse had untied itself and was off. I and a couple of others managed to catch it. When the owners finally returned about 20 minutes later, I told them what had happened and they just laughed and said he often unties himself!!!

When i went to a show i was standing on the side and this pony broke free and i caught it and tied it to the other side of the trailor, the owners had not only left the pony, they had no water, no hay and it was in the scorching sun so i moved it in the shade the otherside!

No, I would never tie my horse to the side and leave them. The amount of times I have seen loose horses or horses getting their headcollers/leadropes stuck on something.
Lots of events now say please don't leave horses tied to the lorries unattended.

I do leave my horses in the trailer on their own, but with the ramps up and a haynet. I check on them every 15mins or so. And I know they are really good and quiet in the trailer.

used to leave them at the lorry but they were always in view. A lot of places nowadays dont allow them to be left tied up unattended although they can be left on the lorry /trailer unattended

I leave mine on the trailer too, until I need to get her out, and then if I want to check my scores/eat/watch, she'll go straight back on the trailer.

no, i wouldn't leave mine tied to transport unattended, i do however leave them on the trailer, with ramps up but top dorrs open with a haynet and water available - i have to leave them to go to collect numbers etc, as i often travel to shows alone.

Those of you who leave water available, how does the horse get hold of it?

If its on the floor, can they get their head down over the breast bar???

I dont put merlin back on the trailer because he is reluctant to load..... not bad or mad, just reluctant.... so I will leave him tied up if I can see him and reach him quickly, or I will take him with me.

We tie our pony up to the side of the trailer and take it turns to look after them. Last week at a show i did ask the neighbouring people to look after our pony so i could grab a drink and i'm happy do help others in the same way.

At the same show a pony was left in the trailer with owners around and pony managed to get a leg over the breast bar.

At a show the weekend before a girl had left her horse in the trailer and went to book in and get numbers and her horse got both legs over the breast bar, it was panicking, trailer rocking from side to side and my freind ended up in the trailer and manged to get it back over the bar and settled again before the owner came back.
The owner was very greatful.

Never tied up outside, but will sometimes leave her in the trailer with the front ramp top door open.

I was sitting in my friends truck with our trailer attached about 10 years ago, our horses were tied next to each other on the side of the trailer. Someone had left a trailer unhitched, facing downhill further up the trailer park. For some reason, it started rolling and came down the hill, hit our horses and then the hitch scraped all along the side of the truck. How the horses escaped with a couple of scrapes, i will never know, I expected broken limbs at the very least. After that I always either left them on the trailer or took them with me!!

And me! It is difficult if you're on your own though - mine will happily stand tied to the box but won't in it and if you've got to go and enter and they don't allow horses near the secretary it is much safer to leave her tied to the side.

I was at a pony club event and someone had left their pony in the trailer but had opened the front loading gate and top hatch. The poor pony had put its head out to see what was going on and got it's bridle and headcollar attached to a catch on the outside of the trailer. The poor thing was panicking like mad. There was another lady at her own trailer and her and me managed to free it before the owner came back. It was really hard because the more it struggled the tighter it got. Does anyone travel with their horses/ponies tacked up?

I always used to either leave mine in the trailer or take him with me. If I left him tied to the trailer for a gossip I always stood where I could see him.

I once spent 45 minutes at a show searching for the owner of a horse that got loose. I couldnt tie it up because its companion was kicking ten tons of you know what out of it. We tannoyed forever and finally the stroppy cow bag from hell came back and snatched her horse with no thank you whatso ever!

When at shows i will leave mine tied to the trailor unattended. He will just munch his hay and be a good boy. He doesnt untie himself and if he did get loose (never has before) somehow he would only graze until someone caught him, he wouldnt go running about causing trouble. Its never been a problem and i will continue to do it when at shows.

they stay on the lorry until i've sorted out my entries etc....

and sometimes they are put back on if i need to leave the lorry and i'm on my own..

Never tied up unattended, mine is a fool and can be shicked by anything, so he really isn't safe to leave. I've left them in the trailer though, back ramp up and front one down, munching hay.

Was nearly knocked down a few years ago by two loose horses, cantering through the crowd, both tied to a net full of hay which they had between them. Potentially massive accident, but they were caught with no injuries (horse or human).

Never ever do I leave mine unattended. She goes where I go that way I know she's safe. The amount of times I've been the only one in a lorry park when everyone has gone to get there results and I'm the only one staying with mine - guess how many horses get loose that I have to catch so they dont upset mine urgh!!!

I did have a pony that would not stand on the lorry but would always leave someone with him as he was a comulsive untier of knots. Current boy will stand on lorry all day! It is a small 2 horse with side ramp so we drop the ramp, open the windows up and he will happily stand for hours while we course walk.

I would never leave Baron unattended either tied to the side of the lorry or in the lorry. I always take someone with me to a comp so there is someone with him all the time.

Not so long ago at a comp a horse was left in a lorry unattended, it somehow managed to get its head stuck in the partition and as a result snapped its jaw and had to be put down there and then

I leave mine on the trailer but take the cctv monitor with me so I can watch her in the trailer whilst i get no's etc, it always causes funny looks in the secretary's tent when she farts or something!!

I have done and will continue to do so with Sparky - I trust him that he will not try anything silly - he has never untied a knot and is perfectly happy eating te hay/grass available! He doesn't care about other loose horses etc. If however I did not know the horse/horse could not be trusted 100% I would make sure someone was there!

I do however try and keep someone with him most of the time, but it is not always possible!

When I bought my first Ifor years ago I was dissapointed that there was no tie rings. I asked the dealer and he said the reason was to stop people tying to the trailer as many horses had actually pulled the trailers over. I never tied mine to the trailer or wagon as also heard of horse skinning its head after eating the grass under the skirts of the wagon.
Its hard when you compete alone.

I never leave a horse in a lorry/trailer unattended for longer than 10 minutes, and I never leave a horse tied outside a lorry/trailer unless I am within sprinting distance, still in full view of the horse, and am literally going over for two seconds. If I need to go and get some lunch and cannot find my groom (/mum

) I take my horse with me! I am usually the one wandering around watching other people riding and studying the results board with horse in tow

Good job I don't have two to compete!

I never leave a horse tied up and unattended, ever! It really is asking for trouble. NO horse is 100% trustworthy!!!!!!!
Personally, I never leave them unattended in a lorry either. Perhaps that is why I don't have any horror stories to share

No. I would never leave any of mine tied up unattended anywhere. I wouldn't leave them in a box or trailer unattended either. Have seen far too many accidents, some very serious, in both scenarios at shows.

QR - I never leave mine tied up unattended. Everything has been taught that it goes in the lorry, gets to where it's going and waits on the lorry until I am ready for it. I pull the horse(s) I want off the lorry and the rest go back on the lorry or stay on the lorry until needed. Flynn and April have a touch of seperation anxiety at the moment that I'm working on though.
