was just wondering how many people have done this or do you prefer to have lessons with a good instructor and do it yourself? And has your horse really benifited from someone else other than yourself riding it?

i did send H for a working livery while on holiday for a week, it was really good for him as he was only 4 and brought his flatwork on alot, i also had lesson with him though but it was useful as his canter is hard work and the instructor was a man so could work him more strongly and that really helped at the time.

Mine has been away for schooling livery - 2 weeks - and will be going again for hopefully a bit longer. While she is there I also have lessons on her and the instructors show me what they have been doing with her so I can continue once home. It is my usual RS though so she has been and will continue to be boxed up and have lessons there in between full weeks of schooling livery. She's 5. It has facilities and experience that I don't have at the yard where she is usually kept. I have seen a good improvement in her. Just to add that as it is my usual RS I also have private lessons and group lessons on their own horses so they can see how I ride different ones and my reactions to things my own horse does.

My horse has been away twice, first time to a well known dressage rider who is also a friend. She went for 2 weeks and i rode her three times while she was away and i thought money well spent. Second time she went away she went for 4 weeks to a totally different type of person and again i had quite a few lessons while she was away and it was money well spent too!!! Both times good improvement and it was a nice change of scenery for the horse and a chance to stop beating myself up for a period of time and new input of ideas!

Depending on the horse it can work very well. I am on a full time intensive course so I can only ride at weekends. The YO does 2 schoolng sessions a week with my horse, and its made a big difference in a short space of time

My boy, Monty went for 5 weeks schooling to a local dressage rider last September. He had reared up and fell backwards on me after asking him to walk down a hill

I couldn't walk let alone ride for 3 weeks and I didn't have a clue where to go from there so sending him to be schooled was the best thing I ever did (apart from buying him

) Towards the end of his stay I was going there for lessons and help with him and now she comes to us. She has also come to school him whilst I have been unable to ride due to broken collar bone and 2 operations.
It has taught me a whole new way of riding him which seems to work for him and was DEFINATELY worth the money

I sometimes send my girl to my trainer for 3 or 4 days if I'm working away. After such a short time she comes back feeling amazing and sooooooooo responsive. Well worth it although I would never stop having my lessons!

I have Stella schooled once a week/fortnight at my yard to correct any problems that i might be causing... I think it does them good mentally to have a different rider/professional approach to riding them on their backs as it keeps them interested/listening.

She's almost 10 and a schoolmistress btw - professional schooling isn't just for youngsters and problem horses!
