-As in..

'If my horse went to a better rider he would really excell'

'He deserves a better rider/with a better rider he would be amazing'

'Im just not good enough for him'

Why?

I used to , I don't know .
A good friend told me that Sol doesn't sit in the field aspiring to be the next Badminton winner .
She lives day to day wondering when I will feed her next .
There horse not humans

And I've also managed to prove that i'm the only one able to stay on her

eta - Of course if she was with a pro she would be further along / possibly not knackered but it doesn't matter to me

No, she is well fed and watered and wants for nothing. She doesn't know sh could be winning more ribbons with someone else, or for that matter even care.

Nope - horses mostly don't give a crap about 'excelling' or doing really well. That is a human trait that is often transposed onto horses and is nonsense.

All they care about is that they are fed well, watered, have company and room for a gallop and a roll now and again.

Agree with the others - no horse stands in its field thinking it would be more fun if it was off to Badminton/jumping Puissance walls or doing Grand Prix dressage test!!

Mine are loved, cuddled, well fed, excercised etc and they are spoilt brats - one is from a rescue so I am definately her best home and the other one came from a competiton yard so doesn't work nearly as hard with me - am fairly sure they are both as happy as can be!!

Nobody else would have put up with all the injuries and heartache he owes me big time if he comes sound lol
Prior to injuries he was a nightmare and I had to work really hard to keep him sane and gain his confidence. We have taught each other so much Im hopeing we get another chance to progress again.

This sums up my thoughts on the matter perfectly

Nope - I work bloody hard to make sure he has a good life, I always have his best interests at heart.

He could probably do well in showing with a better rider but tbh I don't think he could care less!

Interesting question, and tbh I agree with others....my mare gets all she wants which is a life of pampered happiness, food, stable, water and a human scratching post! she is as happy as anything...exercise to her is a minor irritation.

With my old pony I did because her passion was competing - the more she did of it, the happier she was. I didnt have the time (ie wasnt brave enough!!!
grin.gif
) to compete her a lot and she was so tricky to ride that I didnt feel I was good enough for her. But I adored her and she adored me so in the end we were all happy!! But with my old boy, I know he would be miserable if I sent him back to his home (or so I like to think

) and as long as Ted gets his food and a hack he's happy!!

Yes and no.
His ridden work would be so much better with a more talented rider but he is well looked after and he doesn't know what he is missing out on so he is doing just fine with me.

No- my 2 live a luxurious live, they are both fed all day ad lib haylage, tea and brekkie(no they are not remotely overweight). They are warm they go in the field they couldn't get a better deal really.

With regards to performance one is an awkward welsh cob who takes little input from her rider if she doesn't feel like it so she is now ridden once a month by my friend who loves her and frankly the pony couldn't care if its my friend, me or pippa funnell lol. My tb is very sensitive and doesn't always go better for someone who is better than me, she sometimes just gets tense with some one better plus when I watch videos of her ridden she looks happy enough lol.

YES! was having a convo with my YM yesterday and i told her about a phone call i had with someone asking if he was ok i said oh not really and then she told me, he IS ok with experianced people its just me not being confident enough so i made a mistake on that sale!!! oooppsssss

no... my horse gets to compete most w/es which he loves, he gets to hunt... hes spoilt... he gets fed and watered and a nice big stable...what else does he need?

One of mine loves to jump and I don't!
I found someone who loves to jump and they love riding him so I have the best of both worlds. He is a much happier boy now he gets the mix of flat and jumping and has two people who adore him and pander to his every whim!

No, my horses started life with a better rider and they totally wrecked her physically.

If I had had her from the start, she would never have jumped internationally but she would also still have 4 legs that worked.

nope, when i got him Ron was an unhappy, grumpy horse who would not jump. he would bully the pony he shared a field with by pinning it in the corner and beating 7 shades of sh1t out of it. he lost shoes every 3 weeks, and wouldn't load.

now.... he's a much happier horse (even if he's not very personable), he loads himself, he doesn't bully anybody (tho he is still the boss), his shoes stay on for 6 wks, I have problems stopping him from jumping, and whilst i'm not the most competitive rider we do our fair share of competitions for fun.

I wouldn't change that for the world. he's mine, I love him, and I'd like to think he's fond of me - but I guess he might be more fond of the bucket...

Not at the moment but if I ever couldn't ride her on a daily basis I would sell her for her own good. Daisy hates being a field ornament and her weight balloons to risk of laminitis if she isn't exercised.

Nope..... Merlin is very lucky to have me!!!

I have kept him even though he is not the horse I thought I was buying!! He was bought to jump and because of his dodgy fetlock I dare not do more than pop over the odd log!!

He also benefits from 24/7 turnout, so that is what he gets.... however hard it would be to get it, I would not see him kept in getting stiffer and stiffer.

I am sympathetic to his clipper phobia, and dont clip him..... even though it would be much easier to de-mud him if he was clipped.

And I love him......... despite all his shortcomings. Not so sure he feels the same way though

My boy did deserve better and as a result is at a producers yard, he wasnt bought as a show horse but excelled in everything he did. I thought it too sad to keep him as a happy hacker

I agree with above posts. I've always been a bit annoyed with people who say "he's wasted with me", no horse which is well cared for and enjoying life with its owner/rider is wasted, they have no insight into what life might be like. However, like Jane_lou, my horse who was purchased for dressage is showing a huge talent for jumping - not my area at all, and at the moment I am lucky enough to have a friend who is happy to further his jumping career while I persevere with the flatwork, but I suspect that eventually he will be sold on to a jumping home if that is really where he excels.
